I am making an afghan and the instructions say "ssk" and this is described as "slip, slip, knit these 2 stitches together-a decrease". Is this the same as "k2tog"?

It's not quite the same. It creates a decrease that looks slightly different (it leans to the other side). To make a ssk, you slip the first stitch from the left-hand needle onto the right needle, then slip the next stitch from the left hand needle onto the right needle. Insert the left needle through the front of these two stitches that you just slipped (making an X with the two needles with the left needle on top). Knit these stitches together. There is a really good video here: www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/decrease.php
