The United States Embargo Against Cuba - Has It Worked?

The United States embargo against Cuba is an economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed on Cuba on February 7, 1962. The stated purpose was to bring democracy to the Cuban people. The United Nations General Assembly has passed a non-binding resolution condemning the embargo every year since 1991. The most recent condemnation took place on November 8, 2006, by a vote of 183-4, with the U.S., Israel, Palau, and the Marshall Islands voting against. My question to you is this: Should there be a movement in the United States Congress to lift these restrictions based on the argument that they have not accomplished their stated goal of bringing democracy to Cuba, and may in fact have contributed to strengthening the Cuban government? What do you think? Lloyd

Hi! I would agree with lifting the sanctions against Cuba. Nothing has changed for their situation and it has made americans afraid to travel there and learn about their history and culture. I think we should not punish the cuban people because of their leadership. :-)

Hello Clownfish. I think the embargo should have been lifted years ago. There is a powerful group of Cuban-Americans in South Florida who just want this thing to go on and on and on. They forget that it was the corruption in Cuba that lead to Castro taking over the country. Instead of staying and fighting for their country, they decided to come to America so that we could fight for them. I hope it ends soon. Thanks. Lloyd
