I just had a photo published in the local paper

Today marks the second time I have had a photo published in the local paper. The first was from a school program at my daughter's school. It was a picture of her playing her clarinet with the band. It was printed in the Community section, page A2. Today, my photo was again in the Community section, page A4. The paper had asked for local submissions from our first snow of the year. About 40-50 people submitted photos and mine was among the 10 chosen. I'm trying to become one of their freelance photographers. Having my photos appear in their paper beforehand can't be bad. It also looks really cool to have a byline in the paper!

Thanks for the heads up. I had a couple of letters transposed. It works now. Also, from that site, you can check out some different sites where I have some stock photography.

Their site doesn't give an idea on cost. So, what's it cost? Just wondering.

That sounds interesting too, are you teached there in such things like these light-mirror umbrellas they use for model-photoshootings? I would like to hear more about that

wow! that's something you can be proud of. being chosen as one of the 10 best photos out of the 10 to 50 people means that you are a great photographer! go on and take more pictures and have others to be printed again. and oh, if i may ask, do they pay you for this?

They take submissions from anyone and don't pay for them, even if they use them. My goal is that they see enough of my stuff that they begin to call me for freelance work. They have my resume and a small portfolio, so I'm thinking this can only help.

By the way, it's the photo in the Photography gallery with two girls on a red sled. I tried to upload it with this discussion, but forgot to "upload photo" before I submitted the discussion. Ooops!

Congratulations! I'm sure it must be a great feeling to have your byline in the paper and no doubt the fact that you've had two pictures published already will look wonderful on your resume. Good luck with becoming a freelance photographer. I'm sure you must have a lot of talent to have had your picture chosen from that many submitted.

It does feel really cool. I didn't even know they had printed it until my wife's aunt called to tell us. I guess I ought to subscribe to the paper, huh?

From here I'm looking for local magazines to freelance for. I've done some work for a local photo studio who shoots sports photos for school's yearbooks, so I know I'll be in some of those. Maybe someday I can have some photos in Time or National Geographic. That would be a real dream come true.

It's cool. I think I mentioned that I shoot for a local studio who contracts for local school yearbooks. So, I'm sure several of my photos will be in yearbooks at the end of this year. I usually shoot sports, but did a concert last week. It was cool. I got some good shots of some very famous song writers, too. (The guy who wrote "He Stopped Loving Her Today" for George Jones) Those will add to my portfolio, too.

Photography is a great hobby and for many people it is a rewarding career. Photography can be a hard field to get into at first, but having one's photos recognized in a local paper does help. Building a portfolio of the photographer's best work is important too, and is a great way to show off your skill with the camera.

That is cool! It's always fun to see your work in print. I know I really enjoyed it the first time I volunteered for a rabbit rescue and did the photography for their event, and nearly all the photos in their newsletter were my photos. It was really cool.

I just wanted to say a huge congrats on getting two of your pictures published! That is wonderful! I also noticed your topic especially because I had a great friend who played clarinet in her school's band and was even a marching band leader for awhile. I think that it is so cool that one of the pics you got published was of your daughter playing clarinet for her school band. I consider myself a very amateur photographer myself, but have yet to ever attempt to get anything published. Maybe someday! ^_^

WOW congradulations! i think photography is a really cool hobby and is something that i am really interested in. once when i was little me and my brother were in the field behines my house playing baseball and a photographer for the newspaper comes up and asks if we would like to be in the newspaper. we said sure and he took our picture just as i hit the baseball with the bat. it was so cool the following week when i saw myself and my brother as the background of the monthly calender. it made me feel proud and brought joy to my life. what your doing is a good thing you should keep it up ^-^
