I personally think the guy should get the ring back. The ring was given with a promise of marriage. If there is not marriage taking place then there is no need for the girl to have the ring. The girl would just end up selling it anyway because she will never wear it. It does not seem fair for the guy to be out the money that he spent for the ring. A breakup is hard enough without making things more difficult.

depending on what state you are from by law she has to give it back. a engagement ring is a contract to get married. if you don't get married then you brake the contract. i am engaged now and if we were to split i would give the ring back no problem. why? because it is the right thing to do. if i am not going to marry him what is the point in keeping the ring?

If he bought the ring then yes, I definitely think that the right thing to do is for her to give the ring back.
