My friend and I both have African violets. She was telling about a shop she went to the other day that had huge African violets across the window in large pots all in bloom! I've always thought you should keep an African violet kind of 'pot bound' and have never transplanted them up to a bigger pot. If you have some green thumb tips about these lovely plants, please share! Thanks.

Yes, I was under the impression that African Violets like to be pot bound also. A year ago I bought an african violet at a greenhouse. It bloomed constantly and never ever stopped for a rest. It has curly leaves and the flowers are purple and white with curly green edges. I love this thing SO much, so I looked the name of it up on the internet from the tag that was on the plant and I discovered from some info online that it is a "continuous blooming" African Violet. There are lots of places online that you can look up african violet care and even to buy plants. You can buy one leaf and start it yourself. Anyway, investigate the "continuous blooming" variety. You won't be sorry! I've had it in the same pot since I got it and use a drop or two of african violet liquid vertilizer every time I water. You should also put them in a location that gets morning light. I took one of mine to work and it never bloomed again there, but immediately did when I took it home and put it on the kitchen table.

I have repotted our African violets twice. I don't disturb the root ball when I take the plant out of the old pot. I just put it in the middle of the new pot and pack down potting soil around the outside. I then make sure to water it once a week with some African violet food (it comes in a little bottle with an eye dropper dispenser). Seven drops of food per litre of water does the trick. The plants continue to bloom the whole time.

Did the plant get bigger overall as a result of this?

Yes. African violets like to be pot-bound, so they will grow to fill the new pot.

When repotting, use a pot only slightly bigger than the old one or it may not bloom again for a long time.
