Planting evergreens to match soil/water conditions

The woods behind my house is mostly oaks and maples. Do to urban development, deer have started to use these woods. I would like to plant more shelter-like pines, firs, evergreens back there for them. I'm in zone 5. The ground is basically clay and gets dry in the summer. Are there any evergreens I can buy and plant to get something back there established? (There also won't be a lot of light once the oaks and maples leaf out.) Thanks!
