"Benzene in soft drinks has become a very sensitive matter these days. The chemical id formed as a result of a reaction between Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and either sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate, which are contained in soft drinks and beverages. However the reaction does not occur as a rule, but takes place as an exception when the conditions are ideal for the reaction to take place. Benzene is a chemical, which is linked to cancer in humans. It is released into the air from automobile emissions, burning coal and oil. Benzene is also used extensively in industries, which produce chemicals, dyes, detergents, synthetic fibers, solvents, rubber and some plastics. Workers in chemical industry, gas stations, gasoline distribution jobs, rubber industry, printing industry and leather industry are also at a high risk since they are chronically exposed to benzene." http://foodconsumer.org/7777/8888/F_eatured_P_roducts_47/FDA_finds_cancer-causing_benzene_in_soda_drinks.shtml Britain has pulled some of their soft drinks and now it sounds like the FDA is looking into our soft drink industry. I had never heard of this. Why is it that some companies feel they need to put something "extra" into their products?

You sure are reading all the bad news at this site aren't you. Well we should all know! Wonder where the benzene came from? The plastic bottles that are so irritating. Store and shipping too, do not handle these products to be at their optimum. I have seen pallets of frozen food sitting waiting to be put away thawing slowly. We buy those, yuck. The containers and plastics so pushed upon us have been questioned time and again, yet the industries do not appear to hear us. Our new and improved advances for our lives are not necessarily making a better world. Just the illusion! Thanks for sharing this information. I look forward to more although I also have that site bookmarked on my computer.

Many of the more 'unsavoury' additives put into foods and drinks these days are done so by calling the 'flavourings' .. I dread to think what really goes into some products we buy .. I know if I buy any new brand of food or drink and after consuming it my fibromyalgia syndrome flares I won't have that product again ..

Thanks a lot for the info . Isn't vit C more likely to be added to citrus-flavoured drinks like Fanta and Sprite and 7-up ? Or is it also added to Pepsi and Coke ?

In india it was normal pesticides that was found in these drinks and as a result many states and schools banned them but later government for the fear of loosing MNC's came out with that false report about how these drinks are safe. I think money and economy matters not the people's health to the governments these days.

I hate it when companies do this. They put MSG in nearly everything that you eat. We no longer purchase anything with MSG in it. So we are making all our own mixes now and cooking from scratch for everything.

Well, I am not surprised at all. Alot of things that we eat are more than likely to cause some cancer. I just don't know why the FDA still pass certain food like that.

That is very distressing news, isn't it--for all of us who are addicted to sodas?

To trust any company manufacturing food and drinks these days is very difficult. All the people seems to be making money, but nobody is concern about the public health. Yes even to trust the health regulatory is very hard, as these manufacturing company, pressurize them.
