For a brief period a few years ago, Waitangi Day was changed to New Zealand Day, but now it's had its name restored. This is a pity, because the majority of New Zealanders would prefer to have the day as a day of celebration, and a real holiday. Instead, Waitangi Day has been hijacked, year after year, by activists who cause problems at Waitangi itself and disrupt the proceedings. Our Prime Minister Helen Clark has been insulted there, and last year the Leader of the Opposition had mud thrown at him. Most of us just get on and enjoy a day off. http://mikecrowlsscribblepad.blogspot.com

Thats the BEST bl@rdy response Ive heard from anyone ever!! that definitley deserves a plus rating.. Waitangi day to most Maori is not really a day of Celebration.. Most NZ'ers think of it as "Just another Day Off" I would prefer it to be New Zealand Day myself..

Waitangi Day is a national holiday in New Zealand. It is to commemorate the treaty of Waitangi, which was signed on February 6. I don't remember the year, but it was back in the 1800's I think. If my merory is accurate, it is celebrated like our 4th of July. I seem to recall that it is to celebrate their heritage.

Hi Monica1216, Waitangi Day is our National holiday and it represents the signing of 'The Treaty of Waitangi'...It is just another day for me as I wasn't around when this event occurred and am not passionate about it, like other's are...It is very important to the Maori people and on occassion, the event has caused mixed feeling between the Maori people and our Government...
