Do you believe in superstitions?

I have grown up in a society where everybody believes in some superstitions or the other. i'm no exception to them. infact, superstitions are a part of my daily life. if a black cat crosses the street that i'm walking in, i'll not go ahead until someone else crosses it. I think its unlucky to sit crossed-legs while playing cards. I also consider walking under a ladder brings bad luck. Do you also believe in such things which have no logical explanations? what are the supersitions that you believe?

It's a utter coincidence nothing else. You try your luck when the cat crosses the path, don't wait just go for work, I am sure out of ten trials you will get a success 4 to 6 times. Cross your legs for all the ten times while playing P-cards, And verify that you win mostly 4 to 6 times out of ten. This all is explained in logic books, ask for a preliminary books on logic to your mathematics teacher. Just read few books on "logic". it's clearly stated it there that all occurences lai betwwen 45% to 55%, positive & negetive. Take a coin and note the head & tail game by playing a toss, Repeat this for ten times, you will soon understand what goes in logic, 4 to 6 times head. Very simple to take a survey. You just come out of it. Nothing like real premonition. if you can do it for ten times out of ten. then only what you are stating will be true. If you don't get the success for all ten times, when the cat crosses your path, then only what you belive is unbelivable or incorrect..............

Yes, I believe in some of them. For example, wishing on a star. I believe that connecting your thoughts with a potential higher being making themselves known in the evening sky is a very romantic thought and so I choose to believe it could be true. I also make a wish on a fallen eye lash. I've checked out this website before. I've also used some of the superstitions in my fiction books I've written.

Let me share some supertitions from a South African perspective: One of the biggest and worst superstitions in South Africa these days are that some traditional healers believe that sleeping with virgins cures HIV and AIDS. This is indeed a scary thought considering that traditional healers are often the health care practitioners of choice among many rural people and even some town dwellers. Superstition may also be partly to blame for the shocking rate of fatal road accidents in South Africa, where there are 10 times as many deaths for a given driving distance as in the US. Many South African drivers share deep-rooted beliefs in the supernatural, thinking accidents result from witchcraft, for instance, or that medicines can prevent them. A study by the University of Klagenfurt in Austria, compared minibus accident rates with levels of superstition in 130 male drivers; minibuses are a common form of public transport in South Africa. In general, the more superstitious the driver, the more accidents he had. This might mean that such beliefs make drivers respond inappropriately to risks. Real scary stuff!!!

nope, i am not at all superstitious. I dont beleive in any of superstition at all. infact i find soemtiem strane when people believ in this and stop doing things which they wanted to do, or stop going ahead from there, just because something else which is so called superstition had happened in in their way, how they can?

I too am from a supersticious country but, I never beleive in any superstitions. I am not the one to stop if a cat crosses my way or eat curd with sugar when I am going for an important work. Some people consider number 13 to be very unlucky but, this number is very lucky for me.

I don't believe in any, and my mother raised me with all kinds of them. I trust only in God, and the moment that I have to live.

I'm kinda on the fence when it comes to superstitions. I think, sometimes I really think about them and acknowledge them, sometimes I even abide by them, however, I can't really say whether or not I really believe in them. I'm not one to walk under a ladder, I just don't do it because it bugs me. However, I'm not really big on all of those other superstitions.

Superstitions are a mere non sense that come out of ignorance of village illiterate people...i heard people saying not to go out if some cat crosses on your way or not go out when some one sneezes,i did go out intentionally every time and i am still alive...so these are all mere non sense and there is no need for us to believe them any more

black cats, crossed legs - no logic under a ladder - plenty of logic - what if someone is on it and you knock the ladder down or they drop a brick on your head? sort out the ones that actually do make sense - because some do Friday the 13th scares some people terribly - its always been a lucky day for me - win some, loose some ;)

I think that superstition is a tricky subject. On the one hand, yes some of it was invented by uneducated people to explain the unexplained, or at least help to give them some control over what they didn't understand. On the other hand, I beleive we create our own reality, so if you beleive that walking under a ladder will cause you harm later on because it is considered bad luck...well then it will. We have a nasty little habit of creating self-fulfilling prophecies. But its not all bad. I've seen people who truly beleived that a lucky pair of socks would help them win a game, and every time they wore them...they won. So I do and don't beleive in superstition. Once something has entered our brains as being lucky or unlucky, we might subconsciously, or unwittingly make it so. Belief can be a very powerful force. I don't give superstition control over my life, but at the same time I try to avoid breaking mirrors and walking under ladders just to be on the safe side. I'd rather be considered superstitious than end up being sorry.

Superstitons are just a way for the human brain to understand a wierd set of curcimstances. if you do not belive in supertitions and you walk under a ladder and the next minute you break a leg you might think o it must have somthing to do with the ladder i walked under. They say that you make your self unlucky/lucky it is the same thing with the cold if you think you have a cold and are really convinced of it your brain will develop the syptoms of a cold so if you think you are unlucky your brain will responed that way same goes for luckieness

i think you are right. i think the sub-concious mind should not be fed with negative thoughts.

As far as i know each and every superstition has a scientific background. Instead of telling the reasons to each and everyone it has just become a rule that things are to be done in a certain way or are not to be done. In previous days few learned men came to know which things are to be done in which way and instead of explaining it to everyone they just spread it around that a certain way is the best way to do a particular job. For example it is advised not to eat beef at night. The reason behind it is beef has lot of fat. After eating at night we only go to sleep and dont do any work. So the fats get stored in our body for no good reason. This is just an example but as i told earlier behind every superstition there is a valid scientific reason.

I tend to believe some more than others- like that things happen in threes and that you should not walk under ladders. As far as mirrors breaking, I've broken many without much affect. I believe more in karma than superstitions. How you treat others will be magnified in the ways that others treat you.
