Yesterday I Cried - For All My Women Friends & Men who long to Understand Them

Dear Friends, Below is a poem. If you are not a "poem person", I ask you to please read it any way. 2 days ago I posted a discussion about an Inspirational Motivational African American speaker, Iyanla VanZant. She has something to offer to every woman and man if they listen closely enough. Some of my friends had never heard of her and I wanted to post one of her poems. Poetry is not what she is most famous for (and frankly, I don't care too much for reading poetry), but, this particular poem has such depth and meaning on so many levels, that I hope you will take the time to read it. ~Donna
Yesterday, I cried.
I came home, went straight to my room,
sat on the edge of my bed,
kicked off my shoes, unhooked my bra,
and I had myself a good cry.
I cried until my nose was running all over the silk blouse I
got on sale.
I cried until my ears were hot.
I cried until my head was hurting so bad
that I could hardly see the pile of soiled tissues lying on
the floor at my feet.
I want you to understand,
I had myself a really good cry yesterday.
Yesterday, I cried,
for all the days that I was too busy,
or too tired, or too mad to cry.
I cried for all the days, and all the ways,
and all the times I had dishonored, disrespected,
and disconnected my Self from myself,
only to have it reflected back to me in the ways others
did to me the same things I had already done to myself.
I cried for all the things I had given, only to have them
stolen;
for all the things I had asked for that had yet to show up;
for all the things I had accomplished, only to give them
away,
to people in circumstances, which left me feeling empty,
and battered and plain old used.
I cried becauses there really does come a time when
the only thing left for you to do is cry.
Yesterday, I cried.
I cried because little boys get left behind by their
daddies;
and little girls get forgotten by their mommies;
and daddies don't know what to do, so they leave;
and mommies get left, so they get mad.
I cried because I had a little boy,
and because I was a little girl,
and because I was a mommy who didn't know what to do,
and because I wanted my daddy to be there so badly until
I ached.
Yesterday, I cried.
I cried because I hurt. I cried because I was hurt.
I cried because hurt has no place to go
except deeper into the pain that caused it in the first
place,
and when it gets there, the hurt wakes you up.
I cried because it was too late.
I cried because it was time.
I cried because my soul knew that I didn't know
that my soul knew everything that I needed to know.
I cried a soulful cry yesterday, and it felt so good.
It felt so very, very bad.
In the midst of my crying,
I felt my freedom coming,
Because...
Yesterday, I cried
with an agenda.
...Iyanla Vanzant

Thanks My Sweet Friend for sharing that with us, I can relate to each and every word. I have seen Iyanla, but have yet to read any of her works. I shall be doing that in the very near future.
As women we know how cathartic crying can be, and as a young women I open up my heart and let it flow until I felt better, after reading your poem I realized how long it has been since I have had one of those soul cleansing cries. I think as we age we get hardened and build walls around our hearts in false bravado, thinking that tears make us weak. After reading your poem I remember that tears only serve to make us stronger, thank you for reminding me.....
Now some one please pass me a box of kleenex....

I know they mess up your glasses if you are trying to clean them; but for a cry like this, you need Puffs with Lotion!~Donna

It's so good to see you back! I am happy that you liked this. I am not a "poetry" person, but Iyanla is not a "poetry" author. This is just a little bit of who she is. Her writings go so much deeper than this. Thinking about it, I think this woman needs to hire me to be her agent and promoter!~Donna

Kathy, Iyanla has many books and you can get them used and in paperback at Amazon. She will make you break your heart, open your eyes, then help you to put you back together again as a much stronger woman than you are already ~Donna

Catch up as you can, sweet sister. In fact, erase everything before today and start afresh ~ Today is the first day - you know the rest ~Donna

Thank you for taking the time to read it and for commenting on it. If you have the chance to purchase any of her books, you will be inspired to move mountains. She is not preachy, teachy, or anything on that level. She is Woman. She has been There and is going Somewhere Else. ~Donna
