Do you think cars should be banned from city centers?

Personally with the threat of global warming I would like to see all cars banned from my city's (Toronto) core with the exception of emergency vehicles, public transportation, transports of goods, and perhaps a special permit for those who are elderly and disabled. I really do not see why anyone living in the heart of the city needs a car for daily living. What do you think? Would you support a ban on cars in large urban centers or do you think that is going too far?

we have a no-cars day here in Montreal, around September 20th. Cars are not allowed in the downtown area on this day. I think that cars, should be banned from big cities, or maybe an access fee should be set for people to access the downtown area with their cars. This system is implemented in London, UK, for instance. With the global worming that we are having now, people really should think twice before using their cars.

if their is a lot of cars like new york then yea, but if it's usually not a problem then I don't see why they would ban it

Yes, like New York or in my case Toronto. Not the suburbs, but the actual city centre. Smaller cities and towns with poor public transport could not sustain such an idea as people would and do need their cars for very practical reasons. Cheers!

I think it's a great idea, actually, but not until there is a good alternative for transpertation. I visited Zermatt Switzerland where they don't allow any vehicles that aren't electric powered and it was awesome! I wouldn't mind giving up driving downtown in my home city in the states (San Diego), but there isn't really any other option for transportation there.
