Will you grow up and stop listening to this music?

How often do you hear this sentence when you tell people what kind of music you're into? Personally, I like Punk and all sorts of heavy rock, but I'm essentially an all-out metal-head. I've heard people my age -- or sometimes even younger! -- say things like, "Iron Maiden? Oh, I used to listen to them when I was young", as if it was some kind of bad habit or a juvenile disease they'd contracted as teenagers, then subsequently got rid of. Has anyone here been confronted to such judgemental attitudes concerting their musical tastes? Or do you think that an over-40-year-old doctor should "grow up and stop listening to this music"?

I feel that people of any age can listen to whatever they please. Most people listen to what they grew up with, so why stop now? My parents listened to what we call "Oldies" now, and they still do. So in the same way, they never would have technically grown up as well, even thought the music is more "acceptable." The same goes for even older people who listen to Big Band music. I feel people will always listen to what they grew up with. Some will change and broaden their horizons, but there is nothing wrong with listening to heavy metal and punk if you are in your forties. If you like the music, people shouldn't really care. That is the problem with our society a lot of time. Other people are too concerned about what others do, and they feel they have an obligation to make them conform to their standards. I say keep on listening to your music, even the rap music! P.S. I listened to rap for a long time, being the whitest of white people around. I love the beats and rythms, but now I listened to Christian rap to stay away from the lyrics. I know you probably won't listen to Christian rap, as I know your views on religion :D, but enjoy your music, no matter what it is!

I occasionally listen to Christian Metal -- Stryper, Anathema, and the like -- and the music's good, so I don't care much for the lyrics, like I don't care for the so-called 'satanic' lyrics. Rock on as long as you like the music, I say! :)

This is the same reason I like some mainstream rap, because of the music, not the lyrics. The feeling is mutual, so rock on!

We need an edit option. I hate feeling like an idiot when reading my posts. I meant to say rhythms, not rythms. :D

People should listen to whatever they ilke. I've always listened mostly to rock, but I've also listened to classical since I was in high school. I loved punk in the '70s and still like it. Besides, if all the baby boomers now in their 50s and 60s 'grew up,' all those old rocks bands couldn't go on tour, because most of their audience would be at home listenting to Muzak or the easy listening radio station!

I saw the Rolling Stones a couple of years back, and there were indeed a fair number of young people there. More gray heads than any other rock concert I've attended, though! (Well, except for The Who and Cream)

There's something I enjoy when I attend a good old Rock concert: you see about as many kids who weren't even born when the band started their career, as old-timers like me who were there right from the beginning.

LOL! I get that all the time! When I was a teenager back in the 70's, I was very into the "progressive rock" scene here in Britain - Genesis, Pink Floyd etc. Now, 30 years on, I still listen to it all the time, and people look at me like I'm crazy, and say "aren't you too old to listen to THAT!?". Well, - no I'm not. I'm still the person I was 30 years ago, and I still enjoy it! Cheers!

Well I'm 40 & listen to Psychobilly which is more outrageous than punk, & I have no intention in stopping. I find a lot of the so called "in" music to have about as much life & attitude as a bag of cotton wool. I enjoy something with good playing, energy & excitement, & rock Music of all Genres caters for this.

My uncle the other day said im too old to like punk and metal music, yet im only 18! pffft! If you ask me, music is about taste not age, dont ever let age dictate what you listen to. When i first went to see my favourite band, i was pleasantly supprised alot of the people there were in their 30's and 40's, i had alot of respect for them. Kids get peer pressure to listen to some kinds of music, and adults get pressured into not liking some kinds of music, its ridiculous! If i can have it my way, i will listen to the music i like forever, i fought as a young teen to like the music i do through alot of abuse, if i have to do it again as i grow up, i will!

I dont think I will stop listening the music I listen to now, but as I get older Ive noticed that Ive started to appreciate other types of music. I too love rock punk & metal but Ive learned that Opera & Classical as just as awesome...especially when you have a child that calms down listening to it & will fall asleep in minutes haha BUT I dont stray from what I love, as soon as I hit the road on my way to work Im blowing out my speakers. I used to usually stick to one genre of music now I have a love of ALLL kinds of music!

I also enjoy all kinds of music, including classical. I just have an aversion for Country Music and Rap (can Rap be even considered music anyway? ;))

I just had to add this. The radio station I used to listen used to have a slogan.. "No Rap, No Crap.." When you consider that crap is made up of 75% rap, I guess that speaks for itself ;)

I still know and sing many of the Muppets songs, LOL. If that isn't considered too young for me, what is? I can't say I have heard anyone really complain about my wide taste in music. I like heavy metal, rap, pop, oldies, Motown and techno. The only type I cannot do, is country. Listen to what you like, there isn’t any age music to personal tastes as far as I am concerned.

Glad to hear that we have similar tastes in music, including the dislike for Country. I suppose that you have to grow up with it in order to like it -- or be a truck driver! It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights It's time to meet the myLotters on the myLot Show tonight... ;)

Dude, your making me laugh really load out load again. Probably pissing off my neighbors. Its all your fault! And I once got tricked into liking country(bluegrass) with much Kentucky moonshine. It sounded so good around the camp fire with homemade brew and other nicities I shunt really elaborate on on this here public forum.;) Now I'm hooked and have to add it to the list of music I love. Plus its fun to dance to barebut (oops) I mean barefoot in the grass. I want to change my username to dirtygirl. Do you think they might let me do that? just kidding.

Why Thomas, you never cease to amze me! I'd never picture you as a metal head. I say, listen to whatever you want. Even bluegrass if you must. Music is an individual thing and shame on anyone for judging it or you for listening to that type of music!

I was never a fan of punk rock. I did like some heavy metal back in the 60's and 70's. Now, I don't care for it. I still like a lot of rock from the 60's, 70's and 80's. I still listen to Psychedelic type music from 40 years ago. I didn't outgrow hard rock, because it was never one of my favorites. I can find music I like from most genres and could care less what anyone else listens to or what is favorable. I like what I like and if I want to listen to the Blues Magoos when I am 80, I will. I listen to music that gives me energy and makes me feel happy.

Very commendable and positive attitude. I mentioned Heavy Metal because it's the kind of music that usually make 'honest people' cringe, but it could have been any other genre. And I also love the early Floyd stuff :)

Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands. Ever. They are one of the very few bands that broke out of writing music, ascended past it if you will, and began to write emotion. They are brilliant and up there in the ranks with Tool.

Don't be mad, you should listen to whatever you like listening to. My cousin is nearly 50 and he still 'jumps' around to his punk music (while clinging to his walkingframe) hahaha

If we have to stop listening rock and metal, I don't want to grow up! I've always preferred artists that are honest to their music and not sell out in order to make a quick buck. Generally these tend to be rock / metal groups. I guess that might be the reason so many rock groups from 70's and 80's are still being listened too... They make music they love to make, and the fans love them for it...

My first favorite band was Motley Crue, I started listening to them when I was 13 in 1981, I still love all of their stuff on the first 5 albums, and I still listen to other Heavy Metal bands, the types of music I like are Heavy Metal, Punk, Jazz, New Wave, New Age, Reggae, Blues, Country, Classical, Instrumental, Progressive Rock, and Rock & Roll. I don't think that age has anything to do with what you listen to or what you do, my friends and I get together once a week for about 5 hours and play Champions a superhero rpg (old style-paper and pencil with real dice), I am the second youngest one their at 38 the youngest one is a friend of 2 of the people and he still is 16. It is totally age appropriate for that youngster, it has nothing totally adult about it, yet we all have fun!

Growing up seems to simply broaden our musical horizon while remaining true to the music of our youth. Did I sum this up correctly?

I still listen to the same music I listened to since I was old enough to choose. I do like other kinds of music now though too. I am still an 80's girl at heart. I don't think I will ever get over the hair spray bands. 90% of the concerts I go to are "80"s bands.

Nah, if you wanna listen to certain types of music, then just do it. It does not matter about other people. I love my metal, i love classical and rock, and trance. Hell I just love everything, but yeah, metal is, and always will remain my fave. I am gonna die when i am 85 listening to Iron Maiden's Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, or Megadeth's Tornado Of Souls.

You should continue to do whatever makes you happy! I have a varying taste in music and also like heavy metal and heavy rock but not all the time. It depends on my mood really. The only form of music I can't seem to enjoy so far is opera, and I don't really like techno music that they play in nightclubs either. Music genres always seem to have a resurgence at some time or another, someone does a cover or a band from the 70's or 80's regroup and tour and then develop a whole new following. Look at the Rolling Stones..... Each to their own I say! Music is no different to food or movies, some people like one thing, some like another. One man's trash is another man's treasure!

What i think is that since the topic is hard rock and/or mettalic people tend to respond that way. As one grow old gradually the mindset changes and one tends to move to soft songs or music. Maybe the respondants wanted to mean this by saying that they only listened to hard rock or its category songs in young age. hard rock make old people sick and if that person has some kind of heart illness then the problem only multiplies.

I'm in my 30s now and I listen to harder and edgier music than ever in my life. Ugh I remember being a teen and totally into New Kids on the Block. Gah! Now I listen to a range of styles from when I was growing and current music. I used to think metal was the worst thing ever and felt sad for the future of music - I couldn't see anything redeeming about it - now I can appreciate and enjoy the genre much more. Also I understand it now. My favorite music now is probably punk - a style associated with teenagers and something I couldn't stand when I was actually a teen.
