How to get rid of Thumbsucking?

Thumbsucking.. - A therapeutic and soothing pleasure of sucking thumbs, mostly of babies and young children.

I have a 4 year old niece and she still sucks her thumb everytime, I can't seem to get her off of it. She's going to a prep school this coming school year, and I think she is the only thumbsucking school-girl that I ever saw. Though I'm only his uncle, she is still of my concern. Are there any parents here who have the same predicaments as mine? How did you dealt with it? Any ways to stop it? Is it still normal for her age to do this?

Just correct her when you see her sucking her thumb and explian that "big girls" don't do that. Keep correcting her every time. This will take the time and effort of all the adults in her life otherwise she won't be able to break the habbit of it. She needs those reminders. Make sure to praise her when you see she isn't sucking her thumb. It may also be a good idea to get her something to do with her hands to keep them busy and away from her mouth. Maybe some beads and string would be a good option for a child her age.

heheh...thats just soo sweet.... dont worry kids do get out of the habbit eventually...speacially wen she ll start going to school...and her classmates would tease her for it...she ll leave it then!! i was a thumb sucker too....but wat my mom did was a teeny weeny bit drastic!! she used to put chilly sauce over my thumb (yeh actually!!!) so whenever i used to put it in my mouth ...my eyes would start watering!! so eventually.....i controlled it!! (brave me...wat else!!) ^_^

I think you really had a good time when you were sucking your thumb then!;) Actually, we did try putting on some spicy chilli on her tthumb, but to no avail. She just washes her hands and when she knew that she can handle the taste, poof!, there she goes again. I guess she have to realize that she's a big girl already and get rid of it, before schooling starts..

i have a 2 year old daughter. she does not have that habit. so i did not face this problem. But what i heard from my friends is, to take her to a doctor, he will only prescribe you a cream to be applied to her hands or fingers. this cream tastes bad so if the children try to suck their thumb or any other finger, it will taste very bad. but no harm because the cream is of multivitamins. even if the child tastes it, only vitamins will go in but the chances are more that the thumb sucking habit will go. try this with the advice of a doctor. no medication should be given to children without the advice of the doctor.

Nice tips.. I'll try to consult her pediatrician first, so I can be more sure on what to do and what procedures to take up!;)

Your niece is only 4; my daughter is already 8 and she still sucks her thumb when she's sleeping at night. She does it unconsciously so I also do not know how to help her. I can only pray that she'll outgrow this habit soon as I'm afraid that it's affect the alignment of her adult teeth when they start growing.

Well she seems to be very way out of their age, you could always consult your doctor about her habit. I'm sure they know how to handle it!;)

If you don't treat it as early as possible there's a tendency that your niece will have that habit until high school like my nephew. I'm so upset with my sister and brother-in-law for not correcting it at the start. If your niece's parents are not "kunsintidor" type then you can put a powder of ginger on her thumb so she would get disgusted. I heard about it a long time ago.

No, they are both busy for work. Most of the time, she's left with my mother and I don't expect her that she would properly take care of my niece. My mother's too old to look after her all the time. Thanks anyway..

I once heard from a certain individual to try putting something either spicy or bitter on their thumb, so as when they suck they'll realize that it tastes bad and wouldn't want to suck their thumb no more... try something with menthol? I am not sure if she'll hate it or love it though..

Unfortunately, she loves menthol. I think she'll cry all day when she gets to taste chilli on her thumb, I already done it and my mom got angry at me. I guess I have to go for bitter, bittermelon juice would do!;)

Hi there. My daughter is 16-months old and is also a thumb sucker. Our prediatrician has told us many pros and cons, but hasn't really given us any suggestions because she says it's not that big of an issue and thumbsucking is ok. I know that I sucked my thumb for the longest time...I would say until I was about 5! I can remember my mom buying that nasty stuff in a little dropper container and applying it on my thumb to make me stop, but that didn't work. I guess I eventually just stopped on my own! Sorry I don't really have any advice, just wanted to say you are not alone! Good luck.
