I would like to have a proffessional massage done, but never have before. Has anyone out there had one, and what was it like? I have years of built-up tension, and I'm scared it it going to hurt!!!! Would appreciate everyones opinions on this! Thank you.

I love massage and have enjoyed several in many countries. Of the ones I have enjoyed: Swedish: Usually follows a sauna. The massage is muscular with technique. Some pain may be experienced particularly if the masseur (or masseuse) is not very skilled, or if your body is not lissom. Oriental: The Chinese and Japanese styles are quite popular. The latter more so. Japanese style is called Shiatsu. This style focuses on activating the nerve ends and firmly rubbing out the tension from your system. Some pain may be experienced in the upper back and shoulders particularly if stress levels are high and you have been working in a sedentary position for a long time. e.g. computer keyboard. Interestingly enough traditional Japanese massage includes a soak in a hot tub. (not very different from the Swedish style) Massage was popular in ancient India. Together with Buddhism, massage was exported to the Orient and as India became more prudish after the Muslims invaded, massage was relegated to the Wrestling community. The Indian massage is therefore rather muscular, and you will need to be in excellent physical condition and fitness to enjoy it and obtain the most value. This type of massage tends to supplement or actually complements exercise and diet and focuses on strengthening muscles and ligaments through the massage. All other massage forms are variants of the above. When you get your massage, make sure that you inform the masseur (euse) that this is your first time and then you will learn to get a lot of pleasure from it, as I do.

You should talk to your massage therapist about what you would like to get from your massage. Some people prefer a more firm massage and others like a gentler touch. A professional will adjust to meet your needs.

I got my first massage right after a car accident, I was very sore and it did hurt a little, but I didn't want her to stop! After that it hasn't hurt, talk to the person giving you the massage, if it hurts tell them.
