Schools not notifying parents.

I am really disappointed with my childrens school at the moment. My daughter has come down with gastro, so I did the right think and let them know that she wouldn't be at school because she was sick. I told them what she had, then I found out the 2 kids in her class have been away sick because of it and half of another class has been away sick with it too. I think they should have sent home notes to notify the parents, at least then we would have some warning. They notify us of other things like headlice and chicken pox etc. I just don't understand why they don't with gastro, especially as it is very contagious and easy to catch. It's also a worry with pregnant women around the school, they should definetely be warned. Maybe I am expecting to much, what do you think?

I can understand what your saying. They might not have known until just very recently maybe? If I were you, I would speak to the nurse and ask her about and request that she send the letter now since it seems to be an epidemic now. She should send out a letter to parents about the signs and symptoms of this virus and tell parents to keep their children home of they have it. She should also with the notes encourage the parents to tell the children to make sure they always wash their hands after using the bathroom. That is how it can speread so easily.

At our school they don't actually have a nurse. I also understand that sometimes they may not have a chance to notify parents, but a lot of the kids that came down with it in the other class was last week. So that should have been plenty of time to send notes home with the kids. Thanks!

No you are right they should especially when it is allot of the children being affected from it. It doesn't take much to contract it and it can be deadly to some people. So Warnings should be sent to parents....

Your right, it can be very dangerous, I remember my son nearly ended up in hospital a few years ago because he was that sick with gastro. I have heard of a lot of people having to go into hospital because of it. Thanks!

My son had gastrolite too, he had trouble keeping it down at first and the doctors said if he can't start to keep it down he would have to go into hospital, luckily after a few times he finally was able to. It spreads really quick through the rest of the family too. Thanks!

I agree with you that schools should notify the parents if a number of children are out sick with the same illness. I think they have an obligation to the parents and families of what is going on so that their child will not get sick as well. I would not be happy if the school did not keep me and the other parents informed.

They should notify the parents of these things because it is not just the kids that need to be careful, but the parents too. Especially the pregnant mothers. I just don't understand why they don't do it, it wouldn't take much to send home a note or even get the kids to write a quick note in their diaries. Thanks!

I've never even heard of gastro, so maybe the school officials in charge of sending out letter didn't either? No idea. If they notify of headlice and chicken pox, seems like they would do the same for this. What is gastro?

Gastro is when you have diarrhea (hope I have spelt this right) and vomiting. It can be common and it is very contagious. It have even heard it can be fatal, but that is very rare. Thanks!

I know what you mean about being pregnant. When I was pregnant with my last child I found out that some kids had chicken pox at school, but the school didn't actually notify everyone, only the childrens class. I was not happy about it. I think the whole school should be notified, not one class. I feel when it comes down to gastro, they should notify the parents too as it is very contagious. Thanks!

I will be going in and seeing them about it because it is such a risk. The thing is all they have to do is photocopy a letter about it and give one to each family, so it is really not that hard. I would be happy to volunteer and do the photocopying and passing it out to the kids to take home, if thats what it takes. Thanks!
