Why do cigarette companies bother putting warning labels on their boxes? If you're going to smoke, you already know all the hazards and risks it involves. It's a choice like any other but I don't believe there is a person out there who does not know the health hazards with smoking. I smoke and it's a choice. One day I will quit but not today. But I do know what I'm getting myself into. Most people who smoke do.

Im a smoker to and the warning labels dont deter me from smoking, but i think the point of them is not to stop people who are already smokers, but its more targeted and children who dont smoke and stopping them before they take up the habit.

if said that you are a smoker? Then you know that smoking is already eating your time here on earth and still your continue on smoking? if you try to find the site about calculating your lifetime here on earth and you add what is your bad habit or your illness. The site computes it and tell you how many years and days and minutes you will live long here on earth.

But the children can't read those large vocabulary words. They should put something a little clearer.

For the same reason McDonald's now puts labels that their hot coffee may be HOT. LOL Idiots who have tried to make their millions off of big companies instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. It's no secret smoking is bad for your health, even a toddler understands that now. It's also no big surprise over eating can kill you and over drinking and so on.. but in today's society nobody wants to take charge of their own well being and wants to blame anything wrong or bad in their life on someone else. It's just down right sad.

Pretty much every service business has the "Caution: May Be Hot" or some similar label now. Many of those "idiots" succeeded. That's why they have the labels =P Sadly your statement is true too. I find too many parents or (more accurately), uninformed individuals placing the blame of rising violence solely on media, and now (more specifically), on video games. No lack of parental supervision there (before the flames come... I'm talking about parents raising their kids to be independent, with a sense of reality versus video game reality).

Why can't parents just teach their kids smoking is wrong. Why can't people just make their own decisions, why do they have to be told by the government what to do?
• United States

... because the government tells them to, and if the gov. didn't tell us, well.?

its bcoz of the govt rules that may be imposed to put such a warning on their products.

The legal provision of the country makes the ciggerete companies put the statutary warning otherwise in earlier days, this was not there. However the smokers continue smoking without bothering the warning. The warning is also written in small writings only so that it is hardly noticable.

This is true. So why should they continue?

They do it to protect their own butts. I think they've been sued because although people know it's bad for you they still said well you didn't put a warning on it saying I could have these things happen to me so it's your fault. So, they put the warnings on there so they wouldn't be held liable.

I believe that but it seems ridiculous, like McDonalds getting sued for the "hot coffee."

actually it is not that hey bother to put up those lables but i think in every country they have made it mandatoory for them to put up warning and lablels against their use , maybe the thing is that ways they may help to reduce their use and addiction , but frankly people who are addict dont even care a penny about those lablels and maybe dont even look at them .

It all has to do with legal issues and liability. It sounds ridiculous, I know. In this day and age who doesn't know that smoking is bad for you?

well its just the matter to be fulfiled the society prospectus, when a teenager start smoking sould be knowing that what is he inhailing and what are the causes. so its just for them to know that you better know what you are just trying to do. well its not only fun, its also dangerous for your health and be carefull about it. Regards, Sam

I think it's good there are warnings on the packets. I don't think all the latest anti-smoking propoganda is that great though. For example how far smokers have to go in order to smoke. It annoys ME and I'm not even a smoker - simply because I like to sit down with friends (most of whom smoke) and they're required to get up, walk miles away and light up over there. I also don't like how some places won't allow people to eat in the smoking area. I think that's ridiculous because if a non-smoker WANTS to sit and eat with smokers, then they should be allowed that choice.

I agree. I believe that showly our individual rights are beginning to be taken away from us by more restricting laws.

Perhaps its also to the first time tryers of smokes(usually youngsters)who may not know the full dangers of smoking. If you have made the decision to smoke and are sicking of the warning labels I saw here on trademe someone had made little stickers with funny little comments on them and was selling them so you can put them over the top of the warning labels. I am not a smoker and find it a bit distasteful but I thought it was a good idea and the funny comments made me laugh :))

I seriously think the warning is there only because there's a law that states it has to be there. And not all law makes sense...

I think its one of the requirements from the Government to put those label. And yes, it is really the individual's choice whether you like to stop or not even with the warning label on it.
