I believe in the higher powers that be, but I was thinking that if Jesus died for me and mine, I would be sinless today and forever. Of course, he knows that beginning and the end so why wouldnt he include me in the cleansing cermony.

Christianity has many different branches and philosophies associated with it. Two big groups approach this different. Catholics believe that Adam's transgressions in the garden of eden has scarred man. And Jesus did die for our sins, but we must ask him to take them on. Mormons (latter day saints) believe that we ARE born sinless. But if we slip-up and sin, we, again, have to ask Jesus to take our sins away. He doesn't do it for everyone, otherwise you wouldn't need to believe in Jesus. The idea being that only believers will be sin-less. I, personally, think it's a sin in itself to place my sins on another person. Even if he is suppose to be a savior. I'd rather suffer with him. But that's just me ^.^ (Plus, I'm not catholic, I was raised mormon so I have a different view than many christians) You may find that another take on the bible would make more sense to you than what you currently know. There are MANY interpretations.
