My sister is fourteen years old, and being that young she really problematize about her looks. I don't know if being asian is one of the factors, but my sister wants to be whiter and she wants her hair to be straighter. I told her that many people would die for her complexion. Some would even resort to tanning lotions or tanning beds just to be tan but she won't listen. Help! I don't know what to do really.

Without directly bringing this up to her, look for opportunities to tell her how fantastic she looks, how that sweater really makes her eyes shine, or how shiny her hair is. If you and your family look for subtle opportunities to boost her self-esteem it may change how she feels about herself. It know most fourteen year old girls wish they looked the exact opposite of how they actually look. When I was fourteen I wanted to be tan with curly black hair, but I was snow-white with blond hair, freckles and blue eyes. I think she's just starting to notice herself in her own body for the first time. Sometimes it's shocking and strange, but she'll grow out of it.

thanks so much jennybeans. I know that many teens nowadays are having issues, but I can't help it. I don't want my sister to feel so insecure. You give great advice. :)
