Well, I've recently starting my writing courses in University. It's been fun so far and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year in the class. Naturally, we write in the class and after the first month I decided to look back into all the past things I've written for fun. Found this piece of work and remembered that it was published my graduating yearbook from high school. Nothing fancy. Also, this is more of a pilot discussion. Who knows, I may try to share more short stories in the future. Constructive criticism and comments are always welcome. I'm still looking to refine this piece some more. Without further adieu.. Fireflies - by Zairo7 Green fields lay open before me for miles around, and only a single desolate road to cut through it. Water still glistens among the blades of grass. I stop for a moment and take a deep breath; my lungs cooled from the moist night air. A gentle rain had passed through only moments before. The moon hangs high in the air, dreamy in appearance; it looks like a god peering upon its creations. Fireflies begin to emerge from their hidden shelters, ready to take flight now that the rain is gone. I stand back a moment and notice a firefly beside me, not flying with the others. For a minute I think nothing of it, a short life-span for an insignificant being. I turn to leave and find that I pick up the fading insect before I do. I suddenly feel a connection with this tiny firefly. As though, in its brief life, it had made better use of its time here than I would ever. I force myself to drop it and walk away, but the thoughts of my ephemeral being and my transience already begin to flood my mind. Still pondering over my mortality, I was suddenly stirred from my thoughts by bright headlights. Seconds later a man, with a cell-phone in hand, was standing over me. I opened my mouth to say hello, but a feeling of drowsiness swept over me. As my eyes closed I saw again the fields open before me, and the fireflies dancing through the night air.
