Does anyone have cooking tips?

I've recently been confined to my house due to being very pregnant in a very icy state, so I've been trying to pick up cooking. My husband is much better at it and cooked professionally for years, so I'm a little intimidated in the kitchen. We are vegetarians, so meat tips won't really help, but if you have any tricks you use in your own kitchen, I'd love to try them!!! I made some dreadful pancakes yesterday... too much baking powder... Today I am trying to 'invent' a dish with what I have in the kitchen. If all goes as planned I will be eating a butternut squash filo tart with spinach,carmelized onion, goat cheese and cheddar in the filling. *fingers crossed* I'm very new to this, so any help is terrific! Thanks!
