I had to give him away because my mom could not deal with the smell, but I didnt smell it. Can anyone tell me why they smell so strong?

because they're mustelids. like weasels, stoats and badgers. they are quite a musky smelling lot. having said that, I don't find the small at all unpleasant. just pungeant and bonfire-ey. in fact, I quite like the smell. if you keep the ferret and the enclosure clean then there's no reason why they should smell bad. but they will always smell of ferret. (the funny thing is, Hyaenas smell similar, but stronger)

I don't have an issue with the smell of my ferret but I know people that don't like ferrets complain about it. I understand that the more you give your ferret a bath the more it has the "musky" smell to it. I try to refrain from bathing my ferret too often and it does seem to make a difference. Although I don't notice her smell at all. Perhaps the smell that your mom is smelling is just a mental thing? I mean she knows it is there and knows what it smells like so possibly she is "imagining" smelling it?!

Hm, that is odd. His smell should not have been that strong if you cleaned his cage daily. I don't smell my ferrets all over my house. I can smell them in their room when it's time to change their boxes. Did you wash his hammocks/blankets weekly? That will also minimize any odors. If you were actually bathing the ferret all the time then that would cause him to smell worse. Any pet store ferret would have been fixed/descented.

it was probably the smell of his urine. animals have strong smelling urine so they can mark their territory - which isn't good if their territory is in your house.
