Do You Remember Enid Blyton?

As a child I loved her Famous Five books, I collected them all, read them all over and over again, it helped me with my reading and I would just escape into her books. I know her books were banned sadly and there was a lot of controversy about her books. To me they were harmless and were part of my childhood. Do you remember her, did you have any of her books, do you still have any of her books? What ever happened to the Famous Five?

I loved Enid Blyton - still do if I'm honest. I still have all the "Famous Five", and "Secret Seven" books upstairs in the spare room! LOL! Some politically correct idiot banned them because they were deemed too "English middle-class", but I agree with you - they were great, escapist entertainment that taught kids to love books and reading. I don't think it is ever a bad thing to encourage a love of books in kids, and her books had a pretty strong, moral message that bad never wins, and that good and love conquor all! So what is wrong with that?

I now buy it for any friends who are going through bad times, children who need a fun book to read .. and usually read it myself at least twice a year .. So go out and buy yourself The Enchanted Wood and let the Faraway Tree work it's magic on you .. you will not be disappointed ! And I have the full set of Enchanted Wood books .. :o)

I know I have seen them on ebay. Are you sure she was banned? She was in the top 5 famous authors in 2006. I can't remeber what the controversy was over, something to do with magic? She wrote alot of books and I remeber reading then as a kid. They were great stories.

Hi - yes I had alot of her books (in hardcover) and I remember enjoying them, although I can't remember the details now - I had the Golliwog books and the "Naughtiest Girl in School" books.

Golliwog were in the Noddy books but they were replaced by gnomes or something else because it was deemed rascist, partly why the books were taken off the shelves.

Actually, I remember the Golliwog books as stand alone books (although they were probably characters in the Noddy books too - but I never read tany of the Noddy books). There were 3 golliwogs and the stories always seemed to revolve around people confusing them because they looked alike. They were probably pulled from the shelves?! Although they were supposed to be toys - the look of them reminded me of the black minstrels in the "Black and White Minstrel show". I gave my godson a golliwog when he was little and he loved it.

Yes I still have quite a few books that I had as a child. Noddy, Famous Five and books of bedtime stories. I read them to my children and to my grandchildren. There were harmless and a product of the time she lived in. The reasons for banning them were thought up by spinsters with nothing better to do. I got a great deal of pleasure from these books and so did may others.

Lol. Thank you for posting this discussion. I remember her. She was the only author I read when I was a little girl. I read most of her books. There was a library in every classroom and the pupils were allowed to borrow the books home. There was The Famous Five. I had a dog named Timmy.:) I loved Noddy and Big Ears. I'm going on a nostalgia trip. Lol. The Secret Seven, Five Find Outers, do you remember Mr Goon? The Wishing Chairs ( I loved this series! ), Elizabeth the Naughtiest Girl, The Magic Faraway Tree and more. Here is a link about Enid Blyton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enid_Blyton Thank you, wolfie34, for the happy memory trip. I wish you a good day.:)

Oh yes I remember Elizabeth Allen and her antics to get kicked out of boarding school. The Naughtiest Girl series was exciting even for a girl like me (back then) when behaving was my middle name. Maybe it was living vicariously through Elizabeth that made me enjoy the books. Of course, it also taught me a lot about relationships and family. I hope kids, young girls especially, will have a chance to read those books.

I loved her books! She had another series of books that were like the Famous Five but involved someone called Fatty. And than there were 3 female detectives (I think she wrote them) I loved all her short stories books too, I bought them all when I was a kid, and I can remember the faraway tree books...good memories. I sold all my books a few years ago a part of me wishes I hadn't.

OMG! I loved Enid Blyton. Her stories anyway. I used to hang out at bookstores while my family went shopping just so I could read. Couldn't really afford to buy one cause they were so expensive then. Hardcovers too! My favourite was the Faraway Tree..I remember Moonface and Watzisname and everyone that was in the faraway tree! Man, this post really does bring back memories! Thank you!

I remember Enid Blyton. I remember my sister talking about her (she's older) so I started reading them too and loved them! I also still have a very old, beaten up Noddy book. I really loved Noddy when I was young - and Big Ears. Now when I read that book I just cringe - it really isn't very nice, the way the characters treat one another. I can see why they banned Noddy but I think her other books should still be in schools - there were some really magical stories.

Enid Blyton's stories are very close to my heart. I have read some of the Famous Five series but my all-time favourites are the Five Find-outers series of books! Words will really fail short here if i want to say how much those stories are close to my soul. i loved the characters, Fatty, Larry, Daisy,Pip, Bets and the dog Buster. infact i almost started treating them as my childhood friends.I miss them all. Whenever i used to go through these books my imagination used to take me to a their world full of adventures.Sadly, i don't have a single book written by enid now as i used to borrow them from the library.

I used to read a lot of her books as a child and loved them. I am reading the magic faraway tree to my daughter at the moment and she loves the characters. I must say on re-reading the books don't quite have the same charm as they did for me when I was a child, but they are still good moral stories and funny too.

Enid Blyton was one of my favourite authors when I was younger. I remember 'The Magc Faraway Tree', which was one of my favourite stories as a child, along with 'The Wishing Chair'. I had nearly all the 'Famous Five' and 'Secret Seven' books, and can still remember most of them by heart!

I loved Enid Blyton, I read a lot of her titles and series. If you liked the Famous Five, you should also definately check out the Secret Seven. Other titles she did included The Folks of the Faraway Tree - which is very imaginative and highly amusing. And the naughtiest girl in school series. What I liked about these books was that they were clearly of another era, but were still dealing with issues that you could relate to as a child of any period in time. I know there was a lot of controversy over them but in all honesty I can't believe I've picked up anything bad from them as I am a very liberal minded person. I would recommend them for children of any age.
