Should Valentine's day be a bank holiday ?

Many people need to go shop on that day, but also many people would like Valentine day to be an actual day! What is the point of calling it a day if it just to spend a couple of hours celebrating it? Don't we celebrate other holidays for a whole day, for some countries actually over a few days (i.e. Christmas) ? Since Valentine day is about celebrating your love with someone, it would be great if you could have a whole day together and actually enjoy this moment much longer than usually, no?

Well of course I am all for another day of work, but where do we stop if we make this day a holiday? I think we should have Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice off. And I think we should get Shrove Tuesday off also (pancake day). And Epiphany should be a bank holiday also... Do you see where I am going with this?? I remember a line from Shakespeare's Henry IV Pt 1 from Prince Hal (Henry V) (Actually I remember the whole speech, but I will just put the relevant part here...) It goes, "If all year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work." Basically this means that if you had more holidays than work days, then holidays would be the new work. We would have no routine but holidays and we would get bored of them and not use them as real quality... But after I have said all that... one more day wouldn't hurt would it?? hehe.

Yes ! That's right ! One more day would not hurt ! Did you read what France did? They took away one bank holiday, all money for taxes on that working day are supposed to be allocated to the pension system or whatever else they made up to hide them trying to squeeze more money out of the working force. But let's go back to Valentine. Would not be wonderful to have this just one day to celebrate your love with your other half? We could get rid off all those other things like Mum Day, Women Day, Pet day... and just focus all of it on our new bank holiday Valentine day! NO? Hummm.....

No, I don't think you can celebrate every Saint's Day? We don't have a day off in England for St. George's day. Neither do we have a day off for the Queen's Birthday, official or unofficial, and if we were to have every Saint's Day off we would never be at work. I think it's sufficient to spend the evening with your significant other half, maybe a special dinner, either at home or at a restaurant, a special breakfast, before work, all that type of thing. Some of these days are too commercialised, and I really don't think we need any more "days".

I agree we cannot just take a day off for any celebration. May be an idea would be to trade it with another day off that nobody cares about... In France there are many bank holidays, war related, and I respect the fact that it is our duty to remember what happened and those we lost, but nowadays not so many people attend any of the celebrations for the war, kids hardly know what it is about. So why not swap it with something that is actual, and that at some level, will bring people's spirits up instead and may be help preventing more wars?
