What is the point of websites like Myspace, Facebook, and the like?

I think it is also here in myLot. They are also a community here in the internet, the only difference is that we are earning money here.

Yes but at least on sites like Livejournal, Vox, and Blogger people are having discussions. The sites I mentioned seem to have no purpose other than to look at pictures of fifteen year old girls.

I have met up with a lot of people that I hadn't talked to in a long time through MySpace and Facebook. One of my friends went to New Zealand for a few months and those sites were the only way to stay in contact. It's also a good place for friends to post pictures that their other friends might want to see.

People need people. They want to talk to their friends and meet new people in a safe and nonintrusive way. I've tried MySpace and Hi5 so far but neither one is exactly what I'm looking for. All of these sites are evolving hopefully for the better. Iwish someone had a matrix with the features of all social networking sites so that you could compare capabilities but that may be hard to distill down to an easy matrix format.

Myspace is something anyone can join. Bands can upload their songs for download, and people can customize their sites to no end. It's very limited in its capabilities, though, and doesn't seem to be growing. Facebook was originally started for college students, to connect with other students over common interests, find old friends, etc. It's much more structured and easier to search, easier to find the information you need, and easier to message friend groups.
