Cats can be, and are, trained, as you sometimes see on commercials. The technique is a reward system, and cats are intelligent creatures that are quick learners when they feel like it. However- real training is done by experts, who also teach the cat to understand the training. With a domestic cat, if young, you can possible teach them a few things, and don’t be surprised if they teach you a few, (or a lot). You won’t get a feline Lassie, but you will get a better informed cat, and if it’s fun you’ll get some appreciation, too. One word of caution: the extremely important consideration is that they’re not taught to do stupid or dangerous things. You’ll have noticed that some dogs are trained to take some real risks. Not a good idea.

my cats have been trained a little, I just snap my fingers and they stop what they are doing. they come when i call them. and some other basic comands. Though I must tell you they are with me almost 24 hours a day since they were a couple weeks old. and they are 11 months old now.

Yes, you can train a cat to do anything. However, you have to really work at it as cats are stubborn like people. If you don't stick to your training and are consistent, you will never train a cat to do anything.

Only SOME cats. I had one cat that learned how to fetch and walk on a leash. It wasn't easy and I also tried to train her to use the toilet and it worked until the day she, um ah ...fell IN while taking a poo. hehehehe I have another cat who refuses to do anything like that. And if I put a leash on her she lies down and refuses to get up. So she's training ME.

Cats are not easy to train. I have tried to train my cats to stay off the kitchen counters. The cats still jump up on the kitchen counters, unless I am in the kitchen. But I have one cat who likes to play with a plastic ring. We have taught each other to play fetch. My cat has taught me to throw the ring so he can chase it, and I have taught the cat to bring the ring to me so I can throw it. Mostly, cats can be trained if they want to. They will learn to do a trick only if they get something they want.
