I have a client for whom I'd like to offer multiple free screenings of the film, "This is America, Charlie Brown." We would not charge for the screenings, but would promote them in advertising. Is this legal?

I don't think so. I remember reading one of those copyright notices that they have at the beginning of most films. A lot of them will say that any kind of public exhibition is illegal. Like most concepts in copyright law there is probably some gray area. I would try posting your question on a legal forum dealing with copyright.
