A lot is happening in the Islamic world - that is for sure. In the last 30 years we have seen resurging waves of fundamentalism and seizing of temporal power in many states. Iran and Afghanistan are only two of the higher profile examples. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire (which for hundreds of years had flourished) the splinters of Islam, namely the Shias, the Sunnis and Sufis have raged for supremacy. Issues in the Palestine, the creation of Israel and the continuing support for Israel has helped the Sunni Islamic countries have a rallying point. The Lebanon is less of a rallying point but it still is one. The epicenter of the conflict lies in the control of Jerusalem, a city considered to be holy by the Jews, Christians and Moslems. The British Mandate, which emerged after the decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire is at the root of the bone of contention. If it were possible to create international sovereignty of Jerusalem under the auspices of the United Nations, i believe the source of conflict would be mitigated. It is true that there is an ongoing liturgy in the Mosques that promotes religion in a manner that is anthemic to most other people while moderates deal with the media. In this lies a double standard, but I am not sure how such a strategy is orchestrated. For the devout Shia, a Sunni is worth killing, because it will take him to heaven. The same is preached in Sunni Mosques about the Shia. Only the Sufis seem to have escaped this violent interpretation of the Koranic Verses. Sorry - this response is getting to enlarge the scope of your discussion.. but if I were to make a bold statement - Only Mohammed the Prophet is a true Moslem. All the other Moslems - whether extremists or moderates, shia or sunni, wahabi or goatherd, prince or pauper who listens to the Ulema is a monafiq. (fraud believer). The only true Moslem is the one who follows the ideals of Islam.

i agree with everything but.. Muhammad did not even follow his own religion. he himself and his armies killed thousands of people to convert them into Islam, especially in Persia where everyone was Zoroastrian. he also preaches that its okay to marry girls who have not yet gone through puberty, and he married one himself the suni faith was the true faith of islam. shia and the rest of islam came only right before the fall of the ottoman empire. This religion was split up by the english empire so that it could split up the ottoman empire, and it did so. the newly found shia religion in Iran backfired the ottoman empire, and stopped support of troops. Meanwhile, the ottoman empire was fighting a war with europe. The iranian shias who became very powerful split their relations with The ottoman and in doing so, they lost.
