Plasma or LCD ?

What would you choose for you next tv? Both panels might look the same but they are actually very different.Plasma uses tiny gas plasma cells, charged by electrical voltages to create the picture. LCD ( liquid crystal display ) has its images created by liquid crystal pushed into the space between two glass plates. The images are created by variation in the amount of electrical charges applied to the crystals. Each of these technologies have different pros and cons. Both can produce excellent images, however some specialists say that Plasma can have a bit of better pictures because it can display black better than LCDs which gives better contrast and better detail in dark scenes. But LCD is closing the gap fast. APparently plasmas also have better viewing angles than LCDs.HOwever LCDs are improving in this area too, so the difference might not be that big anymore. ON the other hand LCD tend to have more pixels on the screen than a plasma of the same size( Higher resolution ). THey also tend to consume less power than Plasmas and are usually lighter than a plasma of the same size. The truth is that in the beginning the differences were bigger but they are getting very close as each technology perfects. As a rule, if you're looking for a big screen television - 42 inches or more, maybe plasma is better specially if you have to pay attention to the money you spend. IF you're looking for a smaller screen than LCD seems to be better. What do you think? which one would you choose?

I know what you mean, that's why I like those thin lcds or plams, they take less space and look nicer. But the price is still a little steep. It will keep coming down and maybe we'll have the chance to get one.

Thank you :) I was researching because we were thinking about buying one. But hubby has no job right now so we had to postpone the decision.

I'm pretty indifferent, I'm happy with my 10 year old TV that I have right now. But if I were in the market for a new TV I would probably just go with whichever one is cheaper.

Definately LCD. Plasma TV's had their moment a few years ago, but the fact is that nowadays only larger TVs use plasma (I'm talking about flat ones of course), but not because they're better, but for the fact that when a TV has more than 37inches, LCD gets very expensive, so it's cheaper to get a 45" TV. The other day i saw a huge TV....was like about...65", maybe more...in plasma it could have cost around 5000 or 6000 euros...but it was LCD, with an extraordinary quality, and it cost 13000 euros!!!

yes, that's what I heard. I like flat ones because they take less space. When I was in Portugal it didn't make much difference, but in here the back of the tv's is way bigger. It takes a lot of space.

From what I read and understood, they are different in the way the present the images and how they work.

i would choose lcd. plazma's are very good but they are very temprmentle. if u tilt them in any way the liquid inside moves and then the telly brakes. lcd's look the same and if you spend a bit of money have the same qaulity but are more robust then most plazma's

Yes, as another poster said, plasma might be a better choice in bigger screens only because it's still a bit expensive for bigger lcds.
