We are a busy family, and I feel neglectful of our dog, a much loved but very big labrador who is not an inside pet. What is a reasonable amount of time to spend with a pet?

A dog is just like a small baby it needs your complete attention, throughout its life (10-15 years). Rearing a dog is a tough task, considering the fact that unlike kids they never become mature adults, also they cannot speak to you. Labrador's need a lot of attention and exercise. This breed needs 1 hour of walk and 1/2 hour of playtime. They should not be kept outdoors (they tend to bark a lot, and become extremely destructive if they are left outside). Love is a language dogs best understand, if it comes in the form of exercise and play. Otherwise, its best you give your dog up for adoption.

A reasonable amount of time to spend with a pet would depend on the pet. However, no dog should be "not an inside pet." Dogs are domesticated, meaning that they need to be with their family, who, is in turn, their pack. If you feel like your family is not spending enough time with the dog, you probably are not spending enough time with him! I would recomend enrolling in a fun training course with the pup so you're forced to spend time with him. Make sure that you play with him and do some sort of training exercise every day. Labs get bored very easily, and that's when they become destructive and no-fun to have as a pet. If you feel you are too busy, this may not be the right time to have a pup at your house. Whatever time you spend with him, I'm sure he appreciates every moment of it. Labs love their families, and I'm sure you love him just as much. How much time do you spend with him right now?
