15-Year-Old from Germany Jailed for Skipping School. Isn't that crazy?

A 15-year-old girl from the German town of Goerlitz will be jailed for two weeks as punishment for persistently skipping classes, the education ministry for the eastern state of Saxony has said. The ministry said the decision was made by a district court and came after the girl's parents failed to pay a fine and the girl herself refused to do community service. I think it is crazy. I am wondering how many days in jail would spend kids from some of american public schools?

Thats not crazy at all, if we did that here in the usa we wouldn't be plagued with teen morons. And i'd love to see at least one of the parents in the cell right next to her. If your that pitiful of a parent that you cant control your child to go to school then the parent needs to be right along side them.

i also agree with the "teen morons" comment, personally all stupid ppl should either grow some brains, or get drafted into the military.

I think that is a silly punishment, the girl gets to be off school even longer, which is probably what she wants. In this country if kids play truant its the parents who have to take responsibility and they can be fined and sent to prison for it. I think this is better as parents should take responsibility for their children and make sure they do the right thing.

Someone in the US is 'bad' in school. They start a fight, bring a knife to school to show his buddies, acts up, etc... and what happens? They get EXPELLED. NO MORE SCHOOL FOR YOU!!! What the heck is that? I understand detention, but kicking someone OUT of school for not wanting to be there in the first place?

I think this is going a little far, she is still a child and teenagers are noticably stubborn, do they really think this will get her back in school? Think of all the bad things she could learn in a young offenders place, she'll come out with new skills, new friends, new ideas and possibly less intention than ever of going to school.

In England they have discussed the parents going to prison but I'm not sure if it's enforced yet, luckily my boys are not old enough to skip school yet...

I agree with you.For a kid,is it helpful for her to put her in prison? of course not. If that's useful and helpful, many kids in China will be put into prison. Now in the countryside, many kids can't go to school because their parents have no money.therefore, how should the Chinesed government do ?

Actually, I believe here it is the parents who would go to jail for not making sure the kid was at school. Maybe the parents honestly didn't care. I can tell you the first few times my child skipped school, I may let it slide because I skipped school once or twice but enough days to get fined and my child would have been in trouble.

Its certainly not the parents fault, and it shouldnt be such a big deal. But to go as far as "court" with this... Its simply rediculous. But if thats the law, then thats the law.

That's kind of crazy. I've never heard of anyone being jailed for truancy. I think in the States they can arrest the parents if the kid doesn't show up for school frequently. I'm not positive on that though. I don't think putting the kid in jail is going to help matters much.

Crazy bull****. They do not have the right to do this. Being at the classes is a personal choice, and if it bother someone, it must be the child/teen dad and mom. She at leats was not bothering anyone in the class, i would do the same of her, even being jailed. *PS, sorry about my bad, bad english. :P*

This is weird and public should protest this. This cannot be accepted at any cost and i don't understand why she is given a jail term for such a silly mistake of her which has to be taken care by parents and also teachers and police is not the one who has to deal here for sure.

That's real sad to know. i have also skipped school but my principal have never given any punishment, infact she know that it happens in that age. giving punishment and sending to jail it is real bad.

I think this is one of the craziest thing to do. I dont agree in sending children to jails for skipping classes. Education is to give information and to develop personality of the children. Sending kids to schools will always hurt the mind of the people. The mental harassement is very high on kids who spend time on jails. I really believe that they should do some other punishment rather than sending to jails.

They put a new law into place that only allows two unexcused days from school; meaning that if your child doesn't take a note to school with them, it is considered unexcused. On the third one it is reported to the school district and you have to appear before a magistrate. Then you have to pay a fine and the child is required to make up that time. Parents face stiff fines if they don't stay on top of their kids schooling; this is usually only for kids that cut school, not the ones that are sick and their parents know that they are home ill.

I would probably be in jail for life if they added up all the times I ever skipped class. That is ridiculous. If you don't want to go to school and better yourself, then you shouldn't have to. Society should reward the harder workers with higher paying jobs. You weed out the hard workers by seeing who can make it through the most school. That is why doctors and lawyers get paid more than a manager at mcdonalds with a ged.

Never heard of such things before in my life and yes, its definitely crazy to even think about sending a 15 year old to jail by just skipping school. I was thinking more like taking the girl to her school's counselling office and maybe gave her warning about skipping school.

that's crazy... i think it's the student's prerogative to choose whether she'll attend her classes or not... talk about liberty.huh?.... why do they still have to control that thing(cutting class)? ...though i know that skipping class is bad, but putting her in prison won't do any good either, well, the girl should have chosen doing community service instead....

Crazy? Not really, since the child had the option to go and they are required to go. Fines for the parents are harsh since you can physically take your child into the school and then the child exits out another door. I think community service is a great idea if you can make the culprit comply. To be honest, I don't think that they belong in jail, maybe just a facility for youth offenders. Then the facility can take the offender out to do community service. I think we should mandate this in the U.S. as well. If we are not allowed to disipline them then let the state put them into corrections and make them do community service. I imagine we would see a large percentage of our youth in the U.S. in this position. But, if they see that we mean business and we won't tolerate bad behavior then maybe the numbers would drop and more children would finish school. Education might seem expensive but ignorance is more so. Don't you agree?

I have mixed feelings about this. I think that it was a good idea because jailing her will deter other kids her age from skipping school consistantly, now that they see that there are dire consequences for their actions. I dont think it would be such a bad idea if we tried it in America...I mean if you do it to one kid, chances are good that you will see an instant decrease in the amount of kids skipping school because they will fear jail time. If nothing else works, go for the extreme as a scare tactic. On the other hand, two weeks is slightly excessive...I think a day would have done the trick.
