Sneezing - Bless you!

Sneeze - A cartoon image of someone sneezing who may have a cold or according to some beliefs the devil has got into your body and your trying to get him out!

When you sneeze there are many reasons why people say bless you. Your heart stops and saying bless you means "I'm glad your heart started again." or Saying "bless you" when you sneeze keeps the devil from flying down your throat. or " bless you and may the devil miss you." HOWEVER I also read that to thank someone for saying this then it's bad luck! So what are you meant to say to them? I feel it's rude not to say anything back! Any ideas??

I suppose if it's bad luck to say "thank you", after somebody has blessed you, you could return the blessing by saying "you too", or "bless you too."? That way, you wouldn't feel rude and the blesser would have the comfort of the blessing back. What do you think, my friend? :-) Brightest Blessings! he he he

Awwwww... you've been unlucky with the snow, but although I managed to take pics before it melted too much, we only had a covering and that was wet! London had seven inches by all accounts. Not fair is it? :-( I look forward to your update on the blessing for sneezes! lol.

Hi Darkwing! Yes thanks for that I'm going to try it out the next time I sneeze (You watch it will probably be about a month until someone says bless you to me!) I'll update you to how I get on! Oh by the way we didn't get any snow the other night either :-(

SNEEZING IS AN ACT IN WHICH DIRTY PARTICLES IN UR NOSE GETS THROWN OUT.. THIS RELATES TO THE ACT OF REMOVING BAD VIBES FROM UR BODY AND FEELINDG THE PRESENCE OF GOODNESS IN U , WHICH IN TURN INDICATES THE PRESENCE OF GOD NEAR U, AND HE BLESSES U FOR KEEPING FAITH IN HIM

Well, I never heard so many explanations why someone says "Bless you" when they hear a sneeze. It is very nice to know that someone wishes you good things for you. I even like when people say "Good" morning. Of course I hear some people just say morning with out "Good".

I must admit i'm one of those that miss the good out of morning most times! But at least I'm being pleasant and not scowling with a frown so I guess that's a bonus! Thanks for your reply!

This is the first time I ever heard of saying "thank you" after someone saying "bless you" as being considered bad luck.In Germany we say "Gesundheit" meaning good health or well being and it's actually considered to be rude not to thank the person for wishing you such. So if you can't say "thank you"....how about saying"same to you"?That would not be thanking the person but returning the favor.

Thats a good idea, I never thought of saying same to you back - I'm going to take your advice on that I think! I guess it's ok if someone wishes you good health in Germany to say thank you as they arn't saying 'bless you' if that makes sense?? Thanks for your response!!

In the Middle East when someone sneezes it's usually responded with 'farash' (not sure of spelling or exact translation) and that's replied to by the sneezee(ooh! another new word..LOL) with a thank-you(shukran)... so maybe it is a culture thing to say thank-you? Anybody got any further input??

Thanks for your input, I think most countries do it out of politeness nowadays, afterall do we really know the meaning did it really come from the plague in the UK or is that the first recordings of it? Guess we'll never know!

Actually its "God bless you". But those who dont believe in God or dont want to affend usually just say "bless you". At least thats what I have found. I usually just say bless you not God bless you, but I should say the second one. I think the bless you was saying God blessed you for are still alive. After all your heart just stopped and restarted!

Yes I also heard that maybe why people says that bless you is because you already release the virus that it is in your nose thats they will say that God bless you because the virus is already released.

Well because of an old wives tale I was told years ago I don't say thank you because it's meant to be bad luck and also kills a fairy! So I usually just smile back - I guess it depends on what part of the world you're from some people would think you are rude if you didn't say thank you!

Hummm, my grammie was a strange bird. When someone would sneeze she'd say, 'bless you dear' regardless of whether it was a stranger or relative. Then she'd always, ALWAYS, put her hand on your right shoulder and give it a squeeze. Needless to say, strangers found this a little odd. When I asked her about it she said that it was just 'something she did'. Later on in life I found out that there was a reason for it. When she was younger she would sneeze almost non-stop when around flowers, so much so that her brother would have to put his hand on her shoulder so she could walk to school, sneezing all the way there. OK, that was long winded and weird but my grammie was the best.

I personally hate that I have to say "bless you" after someone sneezes since if I don't, I feel like I'm being rude. Although I think it's pointless to have to say it, I will probably keep doing it for the rest of my life. I'd rather deal with this small annoyance than feel like I've been rude or inconsiderate by not saying it.

I'm not a big fan either of saying it and think it's more out of habit than anything else!

I don't know.. usually when I sneeze people around me have different reactions like "Yuck!" or "Eeeww" and sometime they even says "My God don't you have manners?". What do they want me to do, I can't stop the sneezing, it will only blow my eardrums.

well, i watched a superstition thing on tv one time and if i remember correctly they said in the olden day they would say bless you because they though when you sneeze it was a bad omen so they would say bless you to conteract that bad omen coming for you in hopes to drive it away. just like how you cover your mouth when you yawn, they believed that you can let evil spirits in when you yawn so you would need to cover your mouth so they wouldn't go in. for me, if someone says bless you, i'd always say thank you. its just how i was taught and what i think is proper. if they don't like it...fine.

After doing a quick check on the internet to find out where I got the notion it is bad luck to say 'Thank you' I've found that your explanation comes up most commonly - i'm still trying to work out where I got it from! Thanks for your response!

I always say god bless you when any one sneezes. I have never heard and may the devil miss you. As far as it being bad luck thats not true and keep saying bless you.

wow! it's good I checked your discussions. I followed the thread and I tell you, I really learned a lot. People here including myself say Bless you everytime someone sneezes and I really don't know why and what is the rationale behind. I didn't know that saying thank you can mean bad luck. That I find difficult to believe. I always say thank you and I think this is the most appropriate response to bless you. How can a kind word of appreciation bring bad luck? I don't understand. Anyway good posting. Very informative thread you got here. Another additional knowledge for me.

Thank you for your kind words, I'm beggining to think I'm going mad as to why you can't say thank you - no one has heard of it! I'm gonna speak to my mom tonight to see if she was the one who told me! I have never said thank you for as long as I can remember - people must think I'm really ignorant!!

Maybe thats an idea, I still haven't got to the bottom of where it is considered bad luck to say thank you back?!? I'm gonna do a search on the internet and speak to my mom to see if she knows where I got it from!

Oh, wow, I always try to say thank you when someone blesses me! I had no idea that it was considered bad luck. I don't think that i could stop doing it now. It's automatic for me to say 'thank you' when someone in the house with me says bless you when I sneeze. I've been doing it for years, lol! I also have this bad obsessive compulsive habit that I have to say 'bless me' to myself when I sneeze, whether someone else has said bless you to me or not, lol!
