I'm not sure what you mean. If you really love reading you don't think about advantages, you just read. I've been reading since I was five or six years old. It has a lot of advantages, like education, but I read because I love it and I'd do it even if it didn't have any advantages. As for following trends, I don't read much fiction, and if I do read a book that was a best seller, it's usually years after it goes off the best seller list. The only best seller I've read in the last few years that was still popular was The Da Vinci Code. My daughter in law read it and asked me to take her copy and read it and tell her what I thought about it. We both thought it was pretty bad.

I can answer only for myself. I love reading. Advantages? Well 1) You gain more knowledge 2) You spend a good time reading well writen tales and it is just a pleasure. 3) It improves your skills at writing (yes, one who reads better writes better, and I should read more english books, my first language is not english). Enough for a start?

Since I read for a living I can honestly say I DO love it and actually, hopefully, help to create reading trends as a professional reviewer. The benefits of reading are endless. To name a few... it's the perfect opportunity to escape your world, if even only for a few hours or minutes and enjoy another place and time. It increases your vocabulary and spelling abilities. It keeps the mind sharp as you age. It obviously enlightens you about anything and everything you read, whether it is fiction or true story I guarantee you will walk away with more knowledge then when you started.

One of the advantages of reading over say watching a movie is that reading allows you to use your imagination. The characters and the scenery is described by the author but the actual 'view' of it is made-up in your head. If you have ever read a book and then watched the movie (ie. Harry Potter), you may notice what you imagined is not the same as what the director of the movie envisioned. Additionally, the movie is 2 hours long and leaves out a lot of the detail that a book can describe. There are also other uses such as using textbooks to learn and cookbooks to find wonderful recepies for the family. Books can help you fall asleep easier at night, and if reading the right book allow you to dream about what you just read. And most importantly... reading is fun~!

Reading is 1 of the very good activities. Not only u come 2 know about the thing which u r reading, But also it improves the language in which u r reading. Reading helps 1 a lot. The fine example is me only. My english wasn't that good. But the date, from which I started reading, my english went on imroving. Today my english is not that good, but it's a lot good if I compare it with my past 1. I m still working on it thru reading.

Reading helps you learn about different eras, different lifestyles, different places. The benefits of reading can also introduce us to new words, new ideas and stuff we may have not thought of. Of course, there is also reading for the pure entertainment factor and just for the joy of reading! What better way to spend a cold winter afternoon, than snuggled up with a cup of tea, a treat, a cozy blankie and a page turner? :-)

Sometimes I think I am horribly out of fashion with what I read, but I think we read where our whim takes us. The advantages of reading have been layed out by the readers in this discussion, but I will add one: I love to read travel magazines and books and I think it allows me to see (in my mind) places that I may never reach in my lifetime (although one can always dream!). Just recently I read a fascinating article about Mongolia, and much as I would like to imagine it, I don't think I will ever get there in my lifetime, but I was able to experience a small piece of it by reading that article. Reading expands our vision of the world and all its people. And as everyone has already noted, it's fun too.

I don't think we read something because others are, we truly have to be interested in reading before we can actually read something. If we have no interest in reading, we're not going to continue reading a book if we aren't interested. However, I think reading has several advantages. Mostly the fact that the more we read the better we at it we become. The more we read, the faster we can read, and the better we can comprehend what we read.

I love to read. And I mean love to read. I read along the lines of any fantasy book. I follow series too. I don't think I follow anything anyone else reads like a fad. I love the Harry Potter books but not because it's a fad but because it's a good series.
