Reporting people who don't use seatbelts, or put kids in car seats

I did call the police (non-emergency line) on my mother years ago, when she had my nephew in the car without a car seat. For a while, she was helping get him to and from school. And she had two cars- a two-seater, and a four-seater. Well one day she picked him up in the four-seater, which should have had plenty of room for a car seat. However, she left the car seat in the house. Now he was under the age of 3. Obviously he should have been in a car seat. The excuse was she forgot which car she had. But frankly, I didn't care what the excuse was, because she was putting his life in danger. So I called and told the police that she was driving around with him like that. They did say they couldn't do anything about it unless they pulled her over for some other reason. But I did call her up later and told her what I did, and as far as I know, she never made that mistake again.

Why didn't you just try talking to her first? Calling the police is a really harsh thing. I mean, I agree with the fact that this child needed to be in a car seat and she was wrong, but calling the police on your mom? wow. does she do this all the time? I am not trying to judge you. if she does this all the time and you and others have tried telling her, i understand your reasoning...just curious. :)

It's not like I dialed 9-11, as I explained. I called and asked them about the laws re: driving with a toddler in a car, not in a carseat. The laws in the United States (most states anyway) are very clear about the age/weight requirements. This was not the only time that my nephew was being driven around like that. I didn't give out her license plate number or name or anything.

You called the police on your mother? Why didn't you talk to her first? I would hate to think what you would do if she did something worse...

You don't know my mom. And she obviously isn't concerned about the safety of a young child, if she can drive around with a little kid in her car, not strapped into the proper restraints. So I called the police and asked what (if anything) could be done about it. But alas, they could not do anything.

Why couldn't they pull her up on a spot check? How rediculous our laws are. My kids are firmly strapped in and the dog too, lol.
