Are Dentists Scamming Us?

Last month I wrote about a procedure my daughter was to have at the dentist's office. It involved pulling three baby teeth that I was told needed to come out because they would not loosen on their own affecting the adult teeth coming in. I was even shown the x-rays, but to be honest I have no clue what I'm supposed to be seeing. My daughter was terrified and despite some really good advice I received here on Mylot as to how to handle her fear she did not go through with it at the last minute. I was told by our dentist to wait six months if she was not experiencing pain and at that point try again or go to a specialist that would put her to sleep for the teeth to be removed. Well I thought I'd update you all. Last week two of the teeth that had to be pulled (or so I was told) fell out naturally, much to the delight of the kid. And now this morning she told me the third tooth is loose! I honestly feel like I was being scammed by the dentist.

Well I'm sooo pleased for your daughter, baby teeth tend to come out by themselves, it's the ones coming through we have to kep and eye on in case there's a big problem. Let's hope the other one comes free by itself before she has to see the dentist again, but what a shame all that stress for nothing. As long as the new teeth are coming through straight I wouldn't worry. I think it's when they are overcrowded that the dentist has a urge to pull some out creating more space for the second set. Do you pay for your kids dental care in Canada, we get it free until they are 16?

I'm sorry you are on stress leave, I hope you feel better soon, I would guess the dentist gets paid more privately, than if the govermnet pay, lets ust hope this last tooth resolves itself! Hugs

Fingers crossed! As for the stress leave my health has greatly improved being away from my old company and I actually look forward in ways to going back to work next month. Cheers!

Generally we do have to pay for dental care unless it is an emergency. However since I am on stress leave the government does pay for the kids dental care. Yeah, that is the biggest part of this that bugs me, all that stress for nothing.

If you have dental insurance, then it is entirely possible that your dentist is scamming the insurance company. If you don't have insurance, then yes he is scamming you. My suggestion is to talk to friends and family and see if there are other dentists in your area that come highly recommended. If you think your dentist is scamminf you there is no way yoou should trust your dental care to him any longer. Good luck with this problem. Hope it all works out.

It does sound like a scam doesn't it? I'm in Canada and this was going through our government plan, so if it is a scam it would be on the tax payer. I will take your advice and find another dentist, but it bugs me because this will do nothing to help my daughter's confidence where dentists are concerned. Thank you!

If it's all paid for by taxpayer money in Canada, then I would say your dentist was not scamming you because he can probably make as many appts as he can fit in. In other words, I would guess his earning potential is up to how much he wants to work and if the parents don't have to pay out of pocket, I am sure plenty of people take their kids in. In other words, do you have to wait awhile before you can get in to see this dentist or can you get in right away. If it's the latter, then I am guessing you need to find someone else as he or she is way too desperate. Giving the dentist the room to make the wrong educated guess is hard when it is your child. Unfortunately, here in America we expect healthcare professionals to be perfect and we all want to sue them if they make a mistake. But, everyone makes a mistake from time to time. Since your daughter is afraid, find her someone who specializes in children or pediatric dentistry. Hope this helps.

I don't know if you can call it scam, because we all make mistakes sometimes, even doctors. This doctor did a mistake, but you can blame him for scamming. I don't know who is this doctor, but try to find some recommendations about him, and you might find out that this doctor is a good dentist, and has recommendations from other people that he took care of them. Don't judge too quickly. Just go to him, and ask at least part of your money back, because you deserve it.

Can I ask how old your daughter is? My son is 12 and he still has 12 of his baby teeth, his dentist doesn't seem too concerned yet but as I had an adult tooth that never erupted he advised us to get xrays to check all his adult teeth were in place. Thankfully they are all there but as yet none of his 12 baby teeth he has left are even slightly loose. I'd hate for him to have to have them pulled.

well i think dentists in general rip you off! it costs 100 + dollars to have a tooth pulled! that takes the dentist what.. 2 seconds? when i was little i had a really bad run in with a dentist.. my two front teeth had fallen out and the adult ones just werent coming in.. so my mom took me to the dentist (until this particular visit i LOVED going to the dentist).. anyways they decided they were going to take some Xrays of my teeth.. then they gave me 3 little metal plates with edges almost as sharp as a razor.. they told me to put them in my mouth and bite down as hard as i could on them! of course i realized that this was going to slice my gums wide open where my teeth werent coming in and i had a total fit! the dentist came in and yelled at me saying something about i was scaring off the other patients ect.. my mom had some words with him and we walked out.. not too long after that those two teeth finally started coming through :) i hope ur daughter was not too traumatized by her experience to have issues about going to the dentist from now on!

That would be horrible! Yeah, I hope she gets over her fears too, but I really am beginning to wonder about some of these dentists. Thank you for adding to this discussion.

I've always thought this to be honest. I'm not saying there aren't good dentists out there but there are so many that want to make a buck from you. And with fewer and fewer people having dental insurance they need to make their money off people that actually will pay anything to keep their smile. I'm a teeth freak and never want to have to use false teeth so I'm often willing to get things done but I always weigh any real project for at least a few days before I decide. Sometimes things like this happen for a reason. I've had the same happen to my son too!

I like your attitude towards this and I can honestly say despite the stress this put our family especially my daughter through, I do see it as a life lesson.

YOu ARE being scammed and it is time for you to find a new dentist. Since you are probably online fairly often, got to a few sites that address childhood development and pediatric dentistry. Its easy and any terms that you don't understand, and there are always those pesky words, you can look up when you come across them. Educating yourself is your best defense against those who will take advantage of you!

I honestly don't know if you were scammed or not. But from the looks of things, maybe it was too soon for him to make such a judgement. And maybe it was too soon to tell because the teeth probably needed more time before he could form such an opinion. But I don't think he was scamming you, I think he just saw it from that view point at that time. But it's good her teeth fell out on their own, because I know how much children hate going to the dentist.

We had an issue with a pediatrics dentist years ago, he had come highly recommended so we didin't complain at the time, but some years after that we found out, had we contacted the better business bureau before seeing him we would have never have gone as he had numerous complaints over the years against him. I don't know if you have something similiar in your country but it would be a good idea if you did to file a complaint and check to see if others have complained also. I'm glad to hear that your daughter is doing well and that the teeth are falling out on their own. Our daughter was terified of dentists for years after her incident. Good luck to you here at mylot!

I'm also wondering how old your daughter is? My oldest daughter had to have two permanent teeth pulled as she was getting braces and after xrays they felt there was not room to straighten her teeth as they were basically too much teeth for her small jaw. She is 30 years old now and looks great. So, if your dentist felt her other teeth were being crowded and she would end up with crooked or buck teeth, he may have had a valid concern. On the other hand, I am glad you waited a little bit and recognized your daughter's fear.

She is 11. The dentist did not mention overcrowding, just said the baby teeth were not going to fall out on there own.

A few years ago my dentist told me that he didn't like using the so called silver fillings because of the mercury content. After examining my mouth and not finding any cavities he then said that I should let him take the fillings out and replace them because they were old. I told him okay and made an appointment to return for the removals. But I haven't returned because he'd said that he didn't like the silver fillings but he wanted to remove and replace my fillings with the mercury.

It sound slike it was fishy. At the time it might have been the right thing to do by the dentist looking at the x-ray. Your little girl's mouth just wasn't going by the x-rays though. It sounds liek you did the right thing by waiting. I had a tooth pulled when I was a little older and was told kind of the same thing. There was a baby tooth coming in and the old one wasn't even loose yet. He pulled it and everything grew in right. So I guess it can happen.

Let me start by the shocking fact that I have a total of 15 fillings in my mouth. I didnt go to a dentist till I was 18 and then again till I was 24. At 18 I couldnt afford to pay for each one. And at 24 when I was about to loose my dental I started getting them done and a root canal NO fun. My dentist she was constantly telling me I need to stop eating candy and drinking sodas. I didnt really eat candy that much but at the time I drank a lot of soda. I do still now but NOT as much cause of no job it kinda keeps you from buying it much. Anyways. last year I think it was like in the summer June or July? Well I was choosing taffy and it actually made me take out a filling! I went back and up until then I had cheap cheap fillings that I could afford they were free kind for my payment thing. Well she told me I needed to get a better paying crown for one of my fillings that needed a crown more than a filling again. She pretty much made me choose an expensive one that cost I believe at the time $900. I had to a sorta bridge thingy too between two fillings which cost a lot. To end this much I am now paying $80. a month for those two things done on my teeth! Did I want the cheaper kind? NO! But she pretty much made me think I had NO choice (I think I did!) at the time I was out of it. Yeah NOT fun! I think dentists scam us and trick us. I havent gone back to a dentist since. Cause I hate them and well I havent been able to pay my $80. a month last month and I dont know when it will come this month cause of no job. Oh well :) She also told me btw I HAVE to get my wisdom teeth out. Ick. I never wanted to unless it was a thing I HAD to do. I dont care it messes up my teeth being a bit straighter! Unless they are infected, its costly and I watched how it went for my sister who had to get her 4 out due to the fact she got braces and it was messing up her teeth smile after they were out AND two were infected (impacted). Dentist NOT to be trusted!

Well, it is possible that he did believe that those teeth would not loose by themselves, we can't always predict things with accuracy. Having said that, most professionals are there to make money and I have no doubts that they do their best to influence us to do this or that we don't exactly need in order to make that money. There are some more ethical than others but the truth is that nowadays all seems to be about money and that creates a lot of circumstances that wouldn't have happened if the focus was on wahat really is needed. Just look at everything we buy nowadays.... it's life spam keeps decreasing and decreasing so we need to buy replacements sooner, we are influenced to buy extra warranties for things that should work in the first place and that we will probably replace before the warranty expires because it became obsolete before we had time to even use it... it bothers me a bit..and the only way to fight it is to be as informed as possible and not make impulse decisions. I"m glad you waited and that your little one had a chance for her teeth to loosen up and fell naturally:)
