I am a middle school English teacher in China, and my students all love my class, but what troubles me is that they don't want to devote their effort to memorizing so many words and expressions , which ,in my opinion,is really a headache, so how can I make teaching English as a foreign language more intersing and effectively?

Hi, I've been teaching K-G6 for 10 years now. Unlike the chinese language, where you memorise the strokes and a different stroke will mean a different word altogether. You have to use the english language to get better at it. Memorising the words will not help the student improve because there are many rules (be it grammar of phonetics) in the English language. And also there are many rules that supercedes the earlier rules. For a start, british english is different from american english. For example, British: Colour; American: Color A suggestion that i have is, you could try to start with nouns and give examples that your students can relate to. Nouns can be found all around them, everywhere. Eg. pencil, ruler, board, table,etc.. Then you can move on to proper nouns. Again, use examples that they can relate to. Eg. their name, name of the school, name of the countries in the world, etc.. There are also singular & plural rules, collective nouns, gender, past tense, present tense, past participle, synonym, antonym, etc.. Most important of all, students should be able to have FUN in any given lesson whilst learning at the same time. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I can imagine the hardest thing to first learn is the alphabet, since it is so different from the Chinese. Are you Chinese yourself or from an English speaking country living in China? Memorizing words is not the way to learn English. reading is recongnizing different letters together and how it sounds. Two suggestions, do you know the ABC's song? Where you sing out the alphabet? Try that. It's a fun way to learn the alphabet. And always use props or pictures. many people, in all subjects, are visual learners. It's much easier to learn the word 'house' or 'tree' if they are looking at a picture of it.

thanks, I am a Chinese myself. And in China, our students have to face many exams, so what we have to do is to prepare them for the exams, and we have no fun in class. that is the fact we have to face!
