Do you think the town where you live is fairly free of racial prejudice?

The town where I grew up had only one family that was other than Caucasian. Today I live in Eugene, Oregon, a city made up of a large number of different races, although still predominately white. There is an occasional flare-up of racial tensions, but considering the number of people here, I think we do pretty well.

There is always reacial prejudice. Sometimes it is hidden, and other times it isn't. But it is in all places sadly to say.

I guess the only way to make it better is to start teaching kids from birth that color doesn't matter, and keep hoping and praying that they won't run into someone who will tell them something different.

I wish that such a town did exist! I have lived everywhere from "the big city" (NYC) to a small, suburban town in Connecticut and I have encountered prejudice in all forms everywhere. I grew up in an Irish Catholic town that hated Jewish People. Then I moved to a predominantly hispanic neighborhood that hated white people. Then I moved up to suburbia where they hated poor people. I don't think that there is a single town that can be 100% free of prejudice. So long as there is one prejudicial person in a town, that can't be. It's sad, but racism is everywhere. You'd think after a few billion years and so many cultures mixing that this would have ended by now. It makes me sad to think about it.

That is so true momokoseiya. It makes us all sad. I guess the only thing we can do about it is to be loving and caring examples ourselves. Maybe a few people around us will follow that example. Thanks for commenting.

The town I live in is made up of many different races and cultures. Is there racial prejudice? Yes. Unfortunately. We don't have riots or anything like that, but it is like an undercurrent of rancid emotions that can be felt and expressions on the faces of people can be seen. It is not talked about, but it probably should be.

I visited a nearby city today and was surprised to see how the racial balance has changed since the last time I visited there. I almost felt as though I had been transported to another country, as in the several stores I visited, everyone around me was speaking a language I could not understand. I couldn't help but wonder if as the population of other races increases racial intolerance will also increase.

I was watching a special our local news station ran on the latest growth of new hate groups in America. I was really surprised at how rapid these groups have grown in the past 5 years. I was also surprised to learn of all of the races these groups are targeting. None of it makes any sense to me. I just don't understand hate.
