I have been in management for over 16 years and recently lost my job. I am slightly under an Executive but too qualified to be a front line manager. I am having an awful time getting a new job. Any thoughts?

I studied Chemistry but never went into that field. I have been a Transportation - Logistics professional my entire career. Good luck in your studies.

                    You have really accomplished something.
One thing i could really suggest to you is to challenge yourself by applying to be an Executive.
Mid-Level Managerial positions are positions created by the top-level management to serve as its support.
So if ever you attempt on applying to top management and once they review your qualifications they might consider you on it if not they might put you on probationary as Support for Top Management!
On this way you are on a WIN-WIN situation...
