I always notice that most people who say they like anime, always seem to only like the really famous ones, now you might think it sounds like a rather stupid thing to say, but bear with me What im trying to say is that doesnt anyone watch anything out of the ordinary? Im not saying there is anything wrong with liking popular anime (quite the opposite, theres a reason they are popular), but there are people out there who think that this is all there is to offer, dont they know that it is only the tip of the iceburg There is so much more out there on offer, so i say get out there and experience something different. Any comments?

What's funny to me is that a lot of the animes I liked before they came to the United States are starting to get a bit more attention here now. So people will say "Hey have you seen this?" and I'll say "Yeah I told you about that a couple years ago, remember?" I like a lot of different types of anime, but I haven't really had a chance to experience much new stuff lately. Lack of money and time has taken its toll on my anime knowledge base. I do know some people that say they "like anime" and then can only name one show they actually know anything about. And it's almost always Dragonball Z or Inuyasha, at least where I'm from. I'm a little sad about Naruto's popularity, because I'm started to become almost ashamed that I like it. But my husband and I started watching Naruto fansubs a couple of years ago, and loved it from the start.

That's probably because anime is still new enough as to not be as popular as it is in Asian markets. I remember when Speed Racer or Ultraman were the only Japanese animations/shows anyone really knew about, but as the years have gone by, much more interesting art has come of the anime world. "Ghost in the Shell" really sticks out in my mind because it is science fiction, but there is some fact behind it in that man and computer are already starting to become one being.

Yes, a kernel of truth is what makes Ghost in the shell far more interesting Hopefully as time goes by anime will get more popular and people will talk about us in the same way (*silent prayer*)

I understand where you're coming from completely. A lot of newer anime fans only seem to be into whatever's aired on Adult Swim here in the US. Whenever they talk about anime, I have to remember they're talking about main stream anime. I get so many blank looks when I mention little known anime - Tactics, Hare+Guu, Rune Soldier, Genshikin, Eyesheild, School Rumble, etc. I try and expand as many horizons as I can, but it can be difficult.

Although I don't watch anime any more, I did like many that were hardly known like Haibane Renmei was one of my all time favorites. The right amount of emotion and heavenly elements that made the anime so good... *sigh*

It depends on individual. It will goes different judgement for different peoples. Even sharing the same interest doesn't mean they have same thought or view (anime). I like anime all time ever. I'm a big fan of it, but the difficulty in finding one is make me alwasy *sigh* and wait patiently from my friend here. Anyway, live for anime :)

I've always watch those mainstream animes but looking forward to watching those not popular animes , as to improve my knowledge about them. I guess those who blankly stare about those animes might not be a fan of those things.

It's true. But for example, in my country the TV channel that shows anime series look for popular ones because they want extra ratings. I think that applies to every country not only just mine, if you want to watch new anime or those that haven't been recognized yet, you have to look for them elsewhere, for example on the net. So, to find something on the internet, you have to know what you are looking for or else your search will get you nothing. For us to know what we are looking for, someone should spred the word. Because few people talk about unpopular anime series, the others would never even know they exist and therefore state your topic name. Every anime could become popular, but only when people decide to share their thoughts :)

agreed. i mean, i started liking anime with the popular ones like Naruto, InuYasha. and there are also animes which i watch which some people don't. we always to go our local Anime store to see what there is. my husband found a movie that was pretty interesting. we have Soul Hunter, which seems like a pretty old one, but the storyline is great, and then there's some almost popular ones like FLCL and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi and DN Angel, although those series are short. we just got a series called AVENGER which we watched a few epsidoes and its pretty good. a little slow moving the the idea is very interesting. i'm always open to new types of anime, i just have to find one that interests me. since my first experience with anime was Sailor Moon which turned me off for several years till i started watching adult swim and saw some pretty cool and interesting anime on there. then my interest grew and of course i wanted to learn more.

I'm a big anime fan. But, I am also a newbie. I don't watch just the popular ones but I don't know of many different movies anyway. And, because the popular ones are easier access I do know them better. It is really a time thing. I have sooo many other things I have to do that die for more time to enjoy these type of things. Growing up I was really big into comic books but now I don't have much time to collect and read them. One of my favorites that a friend introduced me to is FLCL.

Ok to be honest I dun really watch TV or lots of movies. only if i get time. but there is only one anime series I loved. angel sanctuary. I really like the story for some reason. I agree with you people tent to talk abut popular ones. may be because they think most people will nto be knowing abou t them or they only watch the famous ones cuz they dun have this much time to watch all of them :)

I agree totally. I like horror films and it is the same there. There are so many different types of horror and I'm guessing anime is the same. And to be honest alot of the popular horrors aren't all that good. Take the ring and the grudge...the japanese originals are by far the better versions and do leave a cold feeling in the pit of your stomach unlike the new remakes. But as long as people are happy...who are we to burst their bubbles!?!

There are LOTS of anime titles that are better than those mainstream ones. I am the type of anime enthusiast that watches titles that are not well known. I have always preferred those 'underdog' titles over popular ones. =) People should do their anime research and not stick to only those that are popular. =)

FullMetal Alchemist - Edward and Alphonse Elric from FMA
When I like an anime series I like it because of its story and characters and not because it's famous or well known by people or not. Of course everybody tend to watch famous series first because that are the titles they may have more information about and personally my favorite anime is "FullMetal Alchemist" which is a famous series but I also like other titles such as "Golden Boy", "Midori no Hibi", "BECK" and some more that I don't remember now but I've not seen that much, I've got a small collection and a lot of those I have I haven't watched them yet.

I have to admit, I'm probably one of the people you're talking about -- I only watch *one* (Cardcaptor Sakura) -- having said that, I don't call myself an 'anime fan.'

I love anime but I am afraid that I only watch the famous ones. But there are reasons behind this. Only the famous ones are shown in the cable networks in my country. I am an anime fan if the anime is good and I don't mind whether it is a famous one or not. But since I do not have that many choice I watch only the popular ones.
