Why kids shouldn't have cell phones...

Another good reason kids shouldn't have a cell phone. A third grader in New York state made 135 prank 911 phone calls over a ten day period with a prepaid cell phone her parents bought for emergencies. ( http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,251162,00.html )
This is as much of the parents fault as the kids. I don't agree with giving a child that young a cell, but since they did, the parents should have taken the time out to teach the child what is an emergency. The parents should have monitored if the phone was being used. A parent should be aware of how mature their kid really is and not give them more responsibiltiy than they should have.

If they are calling 911 as a joke and the police find them, they can go to jail for playing pranks.

Well they should just track the kid down and make his parents pay an insanely high fine for something like this. That ought to make sure it didn't happen again.

They may actually have this child go thorugh the legal system an dget charged for what her and the friends did.

i agree....it totally is the parents fault........!!!
they should have atleast educated the kid about the importance of the phone n value of money.......before providing her with the phone...!!
kids can have cells....but only if its a total emergency....like in the above storyy....the parents might be working....and the mst be staying alone a lot....so they were worried about their kids safety.......

Yes monitored for sure. Third grade is young but there is such a thing called a go phone where parents put in 4 numbers and the kid just pushes one button to call the selected person. Wonder why third grader has phone anyway? Unless being used if child is away so much from both parents or kid is in 2 different homes due to divorce.
