congress at least in Chicago have put a smoking ban on most places that allowed smoking with a few exceptions and loopholes. And now some of the suburbs have done it. where i live the surrounding suburbs have lifted the ban untill an investigation company can figure out how much it hurt businesses affected them. should congress ban smoking or should it be up to the individual business? what are some opinions?

I believe it should be left up to the individual business. Alot of smokers quit going to some places because they can no longer smoke their and it's hurting the business. I also believe that smokers should have the same rights as nonsmokers. Let smokers smoke in restrurants, but make it a seperate room. By room I mean closed room. That way smokers can smoke and nonsmokers don't have to sit there and smell it or inhale the second hand smoke. I'm not saying that nonsmokers should have to just deal with it, but make it fair for everyone. I'm a smoker, but I know there are nonsmokers out there that can't handle(health reasons) or don't want to handle the smell. So make it to were we can smoke but it doesn't affect the nonsmokers. Like seperate rooms and such. Just a thought.

I agree and if the business decides to have smoking then the non-smoker has the right to refuse to use them and vice versa. It's not that complex of a situation. Leave the choice to the business and let the customers decide from there. That simple. Yes they can put up seperate areas for both if they want with air handlers etc. However even if they don't then non-smokers don't have to go same as smokers don't have to go to non-smoking establishments. This way no one has their right to choose taken away from them.

So you guys are telling me that it's all up to the business to weather let you smoke or not. Legally, the last say is still the govt because they have had a bunch on laws approved by congress to back it up. Also there's the global warming act, the clean air act and the petition against lung cancer and such. Truth be told, I feel dumb founded if smokers were given rights to smoke at all. Smoking is a harmful ADDICTION/VICE that is manipulated by the weak willpower of the individual. Sure, people will say hey how about cars that pollute or industries that pollute too. Got news for you, not everyone smokes because smoking isn't a necessity it doesn't have any direct health benefits. I believe the automotive industry pays more attention to the clean air act than individuals who smoke. It's all down to the discipline and willpower of the smoker. If you can't quit smoking, it's your loss and at the expense of the health of the people around you. You want to see birth defects because of smoke toxins? You want to see a lung specimen of a smokers lungs? You want to see lung cancer patients who got their cancer from smoking? Simply log on to the net or visit your nearest major hospital.

I think it should be up to the individual business. They know what they want, what customers come to their place, and which will effect them positively. The government should not take that choice from them. The business should have the right to decide if they want to allow smoking or not, to determine which stance they want to take, and how they want their business run. They can post which they are and then customers can make the choice on whether or not to patronize them.
