It can be a big deal, depending on how far their dislike of you goes. I know people who's in-laws hate them so much, they call Child Protective Services on their kids, tell lies about them to their partners, etc. My in-laws hate me, so they refuse to talk to my husband or allow him contact his own sister (she's still just a kid, there's a big age difference). My mother-in-law's boyfriend will tell my husband things about me that aren't true and can't be repeated here and that I'll cause him to kill himself. Lovely, don't you think? So, yes, having your in-laws not like you can be a very big deal. However, if people would just tolerate eachother, it wouldn't be so bad.
