Dark Energy - have you heard of this?...WHY?

My husband told me a little about an article he read about Dark Energy - which apparently is everywhere in the universe and there is the same amount of it in the three feet between my refrigerator and stove as there is in the same amount of space in the middle of the Sahara desert and on the moon. The theory is fascinating, that this "energy" is the fabric that holds it all together (or is causing the universe to expand). Now, I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and it's "hypothetical"! I am definately not a science wiz, but the fact that they are attempting to explain the way the universe works based on a hypothetical variant seems to scream "I just need an answer!! Any answer!! Really - Hey! Dark Matter, that sounds good!" Why not just say God, and put in as much effort in trying to proove his existance....oh - yeah - those people are out there too. Isn't it possible to just live in this beautiful place for the tiny amount of time we are here and just enjoy BEING, instead of spending so much of that time trying to figure out WHY?
