Dress code: is it necessary?

i am a college goer and recently our college introduced a dress code. according to them we should come formaly dressed i.e. in shirts and trousers for both boys and girls. most of us are not very happy with this new change. we are grownups, we are adults, we know what is good or bad for us. what i want to know is that is the dress code really necessary? why do they need to police us like that? what good will the dress code bring in our personality? in college, shouldn't they let us be?
