Have you thought of volunteering as a Big Sister or Big Brother?

I have seen commercials for years, about people in the community volunteering to be a Big Brother.. and less frequently, to be a Big Sister. I wonder how many people actually volunteer, though? I have not, but it seems like such a wonderful thing to do- to be a role model to children who have a less than wonderful home environment.
I don't know how popular this program still is, considering there are so many child predators out there. I would hope background checks are being run on these people, etc.. to make sure they are the right people - the right role models - for children.

it's such a good idea. You need to follow through with it if youre so inclined. Although I think the need for Big Brothers is much higher. My husband is currently in the application process. We live in Canada. He needs to get a criminal records check, child abuse registry check as well as 4 references from people and employers who have known him longer than 10 years. I can't wait until he finally gets his little brother! we have no children.

I was a big Sister all through High school until I had my son. After I had him I just didn't have the time to do it anymore. I know some people continue even though they have a family and I commend them, I just couldn't. To become a BIg Brother or Big Sister you have to go through a screening process and well as numerous background checks. When I did it I loved it. I would encourage anyone witht he time and the passion for children to give it a try.

I am an only child and so I did think about it at one time.
It never materialized though and now I am a mother of a special needs child and so have no time for this but it is a worhty cause!
