People should learn to be selfish or are naturally selfish?

Almost all of my income are contributed to my parents' debts, leaving not much or can say nothing for myself. However, they are my parents and I should help them. The most disappointed words I heard from my boyfriend made me feel of this word - selfish. He said that I shouldn't help my parents but to help him to pay OUR house installment after we get married. Otherwise, he won't afford to pay for the house installment - then, no need to get married.
Therefore, people are naturally selfish?

I think that people a naturally selfish (if that can be called selfish) because of the natural instinct of self-saving, which is present in any living being.
