Why is Israel Doing This? Why don't they just let the Palestians Fix It?

Sporadic Palestian protest brokelout in Jerusalem and the West Bank on Saturday over Israel's construction of a ramp leading to a flashpoint holy site.
Israel denies the repair work will come anywhere near the holy site, know to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.
The compound--a catalyst for earlier rounds of Israel-Palestinian fighting--is home to the thir holiest site in Islam and is believed to be the site where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.
The Israelis say the purpose of the construction project is to build a new walkway leading to the mount to replace a ramp that was damaged in a 2004 snowstorm. But the Palestinians say the excavations are actually attempts to damage their shrines.
Israeli official reject that accusation and say they are not digging under the compound since the work is about 200 feet away from the mount.
Since this is the third time in recent memory that violence has occured because of the mount, why is Israel doing this.
I think they could just avoid this new round of violence by letting the Palestians work on the bridge.
What is your opinion? Do you see some other motive here?

In a way I could say that can't the Palestinians just relax too. You know I think that this on-going bickering and battling may be cut down a little if they both exercised a few methods that work successfully in everyday life....
Its like a fight between two competative children....
One intentionally fudges with the other's effort only to get a reaction. They steal the basketball on the play ground hoping the other will want to fight about it. If the other just says "Whatever then" the antagonist loses because he/she was hoping for a fight.... Then the other may want to pick a fight and calls names or talks about the other's mother....
If the other just says "Yeah whatever." Then they lose again. Sometimes (not always) people do things that are messed up for a reaction out of the other person. To upset the other person for whatever reason and showing that they got to you only allows them to win! If you act like you couldn't spare time in your day for their bait then they eventually will move on to pick on someone else....
The trick is to not always react. Stay guarded of course but jump to react because generally this is the desired resultof the antagonist. It encourages them.

It does sometimes seem like a over reaction on both sides.
I know the time Sharon visited the Temple Mount he was told that there would be a violent reaction but he went ahead anyway.
And the results of that visit is still being felt.
I do wish both sides would grow up and do what's best for the common everyday person.

I don't think there will ever be peace there. Don't they ever get tired of fighting?

I know I would be sick and tired of fighting for such a long period of time.
Both sides are wrong on this issue. But neither wants to take the first step towards peace.
The Palestians continue to use violence as a tool and the Israelis continue to build settlements.
United Nations rules forbid settlements to be built on occupied lands. But the U.S. and Israel just looks the other way.
I sure hope both sides get their act together before it's too late.
