As I look around this site there seems to be mostly young people , I am 64 and I still have my parents who are 88 years old , It will be my Dads 89 birthday tomorrow ( Sunday the 11th )and My husband ,My youngest son and myself are taking them out for a meal . The sadly both have Alzheimer's and both still live in their own home ( I go down every day) is this unusual in this day and age to still have your parents at 88 and 89 years old , please don't think it is all doom and gloom because it isn't we have brilliant days and laugh a lot , xx

You are so lucky to still have both of your parents at their age. I am 46 and my Mother is 75, my Father is 81. They are both extremely healthy and active, and I thank God for them and their health every day. Your parents are lucky to have your love and support so that they can stay in their own home. That is something that would mean a lot to me. My parents have been married for 52 years and have lived in their house the entire time. I would do whatever it took so that they could both stay there. Have a great time tomorrow!

I don't look at my parents as elderly yet . My dad is in his sixties and my mom is in her fifties and still see them as young and hope they will remain on earth for a long time yet as I can't imagine my life without them in it and a part of what I do .

Hi Weemam, I agree with you as I have been looking around and notice that the majority of people here on mylot are very young, you are very lucky to still have your parents, as mine have passed away. Wow way to go for your father, please wish him a Happy Birthday from me, that is so nice that you are all going to take your father out for a meal. Yes unfortunately it is very unusual to go and see our parents everyday. No it is not unusual to still have your parents at age 88 and 89 years of age some people are very lucky and still have their parents. I am happy that you enjoy your life as that is what life is all about not just gloom.

Getting older just means that you have more perspective on our foibles and difficulties that we younger MyLoteers may have. You also have more insighgt into the world today and the world and times as they have changed. Your parents are also the repositories of tons of information that will not be told in the same way by anyone else once they pass. First hand accounts of living while history was made. So don't look at us and think that your getting old. You're just far farther along the road to getting better than many of us here are.

Yes, enjoy them!!!! I lost my parents and two brothers in an automobile accident when I was 14. So I don't know what it's like to have elderly parents. I am, however, a grandmother, with three grandchildren and many surrogate grandchildren!!! Every child deserves to have a grandma!! Cherish your moments with your elderly parents/grandparents, for after all, unless something happens to each of us, we'll all get there sometime! And I know my kids/grandkids are gonna miss me! And that's how I want it. Can you imagine them saying, "Boy, am I glad she's gone!!!" ??? So, I do all I can to bring happiness to each one of them!! I want them to have happy memories of me. And yes, laugh!!! There is nothing better than to laugh!

I'm in my late 30s and my dad is 70 and mum is 62. They bought a treadmill last year which quite scared me at first. They've just celebrated 40 years of marriage together and my mum seems to have more energy than me! They buy each other Valentine's cards and stuff like that which people assume that people who've been married for years don't do. They both receive a pension but I don't see them as elderly. They're just energetic pensioners! I hope you have a lovely family meal with your parents today. x

Hello ! Your are so blessed to have your parents nearing their 90's.Even more you too are 64 & to continue to have their presence for so long is something very few get to experience. I too have my parents in their 75's its a blessing .I wish & pray that they too see their 90's. We have a lot of fun ,their presence makes a lot of difference. Its so nice to know that you are planning to go out.

Happy birthday to your father!! I think you are lucky to have your parents accompany you for so long a time. When you are sad, they comfort you; When you have achievements, they share your joy. They are always there,no matter how you change.Maybe the connection with them reduced when you had your own family your own child, but the deep love won't change forever. I am a young girl,my parents are getting old.Sometimes it is sad to find that Father is not as strong as before,Mother begins to hear me not well enough. However it is also warm to find that there are so many memories we three can share. Blessing every day!Hope we all can cherish our life!!
