Is virginity still respected among us

At a time among we africans virginity was respected and honoured but i don't seem to understand why importance is not attached to it.in those days when a man marries his wife a virgin,he gives the parent of the lady lots of gifts showing that their daughter was well brought up but if she was met disvirgined her parents may get nothing.does it really mean that we have lost our virtue.i don't really know about other countries. from the guys view what do you think.
