Could you live in pioneer days?

I have always been a big fan of TV westerns and movies about the pioneer days, but I don't know how those pioneer women did it!
My washing machine drain hose, the part that goes into the floor, decided to freeze up a few days ago. The water comes in but it won't go out! So I have been hand washing the necessary things until I can convince it to thaw. It made me think of those poor pioneer ladies who had to beat their clothes against a rock or wrestle with a washboard!
How about you? Do you think that if you were sent back in time to pioneer days, that you could do without all your modern conveniences?

Good god no! I don't even like to go camping. I am a huge fan of electricity and indoor plumbing. This reminds me of an Oprah show I watched where Oprah and her friend Gayle visited some sort of pbs reality show where people lived back in the pioneer days (maybe it was called Colonial House or something like that). The people had to work sun up to sun down to get the most basic chores done. Oprah stayed there overnight or for a couple of days. I was surprised that she adapted ok to the environment but Gayle who grew up rich with a maid didn't fare so well.

I went to an outdoor museum once that had differnt (immigrant) farms which settled in america. I love that museum! But I was impressed with how some 'had more' so they did more, worked harder, were more serious it seemed, like the German farm, but the Norwegian and Swedish farms didn't seem as 'heavy'. They 'had less' and therefore they worked less.. I think I would like the freer spirited farms best.. But the whole museum was wonderful! This thread reminds me of how much I love that way of life.. Don't necessarily want to do it now though.. getting too old.. and am too spoiled..

I prefer pioneer days to these days where we live in a too fast pace society where everyone is judging and no one is lending a helping hand, where everything is out in the open. Where are there moral values?

I actually think I would like it. I used to be one of those "old hippies" :)) that thought how great it would be to live off the land. Now that I'm in my fifties, forget it! But I think I would have enjoyed life before the modern day mass production, fast traffic and media everywhere, etc.. To this day, I like to use candlelight.. and pretend there's no such thing as electricity and television, for awhile.. Of cours ideal weather would work out much better! And boy oh boy, they did work alot. Would be kind of scarey to have to grow and can all your food.. I think living in a friendly native american village would've been even better!

I always thought I could and dreamed of it when I used to watch Little House on the Prairie and read the Laura Ingalls books.

Not for me. I am so spoiled to the modern day conveniences that I would have a hard time surviving. Once I went camping and thought it was wonderful, but everyone sort of teased me, b/c I wanted the tent set up nearest the restrooms/shower area and had a plug in also so I could use my fan at night. Roughing it, huh? I guess I'm not much for the pioneer thing. I do love a fireplace and candle light though.
