My week from HELL

Hi everyone. I was gone for three days because my youngest son who's 3 months old ended up in the hospital. It started Monday 2-5 when he started getting a fever then it went away then it would come back. Well on tuesday the 6th he wouldn't eat at all and all that he did was sleep and his fever was pretty bad. I then called the doctors the nest day and took him to the office. My son's doctor admitted him to the hospital and i was told that he wasn't getting any air so we had to put him in a tent that would give him the oxigen that he needed. I felt so bad because at 3 months old there is nothing that they can do to let you know whats wrong. If i had knowen that he was that sick then i would have taken him to the doctors the day befor. So on Wednesday he was addmitted to the hospital for what is called RSV which is a virus that affects the lungs. We stayed there until Friday. I got very little sleep while he was there because i was up most of the time worring about him. He is now home thank god that he's doing so much better. I was so worried about him. I'm still tired because i didn't get to sleep yesterday and then i had to go to work. So with him at the hospital and worrie like i was it seemed like a week from hell. I had more going on with the other kids but at least i got the little one taken care of first. Has anyone else gone through the RSV thing like this???

Yes when my son was 6 months old its was boxing day and he woke up in the middle of the night with a high fever i treated it with baby tempra. This brought his fever down just a bit so i sponged bathed him and that helped. I took him to bed with me but I never slept he was just to hot. I ended up calling the ambulance at 5:30 in the morning it was so scary he was not responding to me and would not nurse. He was admitted right away and they tried so many times to get an iv in him but his veins just get collapsing. They even tried to put one in his head. It was soooooooooo scary, they had life flight on ready to take him to sick kids i had to get 1 ounce of fluid in him every hour or they had to take him. I lived in a small town with no car and i didn't know how i would get to see him but if it was what had to be done then so be it but i was going to try to keep him near me. He was put in the tent with only a diaper on and cool mist raining down on him he just cried and cried it was horrible. His fever broke at 11 am the next day and it took a week before the released him. I am glad your little one is home now get some rest tomorrow will be a better day.

omg i don't know if i would have been able to deal with what you went throu. I hope that your little one is doing good. I just about cryed when they took blood from my little one. The doctor order a full blood work on him just to make sure that they didn't have to send him out. We got really lucky that we where able to stay close to home.

I'm so sorry your baby is going through that! My son is a little over a year old, so we were concerned about that last year. Luckly he didn't get it. It's good that you got him to the doctors and they could take care of him in the hospital. It's so scary to watch any baby go through that stuff. Hope he's feeling better!

Thank you. He was able to come home last night. I'm so glade that i'm not the only one that has to worrie about all of that. He's my fourth child so i bet you can guess why it was to hard on me to stay at the hospital feeling so helpless. My husband was home with the other three but i was never given the chance to come home and be with them. The baby needed me as well. if it was you what would you have done. Would you have stayed with your baby or gone home to be with the other three?

I would have stayed with the baby the others had your husband but do you think you would have been able to stay at home knowing your baby was alone. No you were right to stay with the baby. I slept on the chair in my sons room the whole time he was there and i had an older child at home i called her and had my husband bring her to the hospital the one night and we had dinner together.

my husband never showed up on thursday. He was to bissy watching nexel racing line up for the budshoot out and eatting dinner then going to visit the baby so that i could have a few minutes with the other kids.. So i had to go right back to the baby. I did leave for about 1 hour long enough to come home and shower. then it was back to the baby.

i am gald that your son is okey now... now you can rest and have a goodnight sleep.. being a mom it is hard for us if our baby has fever or having illnesses. it breaks out heart seeing them suffer at young age. i never experience my son having that RSV, but my son is prone to colds and flu... goodluck happy parenting to us.

thank you. It is very hard on us mother's to watch our children get sick and we have so much more to do then just look at them. We have to try to make them feel better. I'm just so tired because not only am i a full time mom to 4 but i also have a full time job and my husband wants me to do everything in the house by myself. I live were there is snow every year and i had to go out and shovel my drive way tonight just so that i could get my care put away because he was to bissy doing who knows what to go out and do it himself. i'm sorry if i seem to be ranting i'm just a little crabby bacause i'm tired and am trying ti unwind for a little befor going to bed. I guess that i'm over tired.

Hi there - my son has never gotten this. I read your post and just thought I would wish you well. I have no advice to give but I will say a prayer for you. Your boy is resilient, they are much tougher than we think! Hugs from another mother.

i must consider myself blessed cause i never had that sort of problems with my kids when they were that young. and i'm thankful to god that your baby is doing fine now. there were a couple of times when my two sons had severe stomachache, not at the same time, though. they were both confined to the hospital but it's a good thing that they got over it. we all got over it. it's really hard when your child is sick. don't forget to pray cause prayers really can move mountains.

My son went through that too I know how you feel. He only had a cold he didn't even have a fever I just knew he wasn't breathing right. I took him to the ER and they told me it was a cold and sent me home. The next day he stopped breathing and we rushed him in. They in turn rushed him to a childrens trauma hospital. He was in the ICU for almost a week. He went through several spells where he quit breathing entirely and we almost lost him. It only took a week and a half for him to get better and when he did I never felt so relieved. Its a scary scary thing when your kids are sick like that. I now know to trust my instincts better and when I think something is wrong I'm gonna be the one to jump all over the doctors until they do something because they will not send me home again telling me its something minor when I know its not! Glad your little one is feeling better, and your week from hell is over!

I am so glad you little one is doing better. RSV is serious, babies can die from it. I knew a baby that had it, she was in the hospital for a week, she was real sick. Its too bad you had to go to work, they should have given you some days off work.

I have years ago when my 20 year old was 2, I had to rush him to the hospital on account of him not breathing and at the time he was in a play group. Luckily the one in charge knew CPR. He was also placed in a tent. The doctors mangaged to tell me that he was born with a narrow throat and everytime he gets a cold it swells up. Luckily he hasn't had this in a very long time.

So sorry abouth the childs health issues. I've never heard of RSV though. I'm going to have to check out the site someone else suggested just for my personal issues. As a child of around 4 years old I had breathing issues. My parents brushed it off a couple months as they felt it was from the dust stirred up from remodeling our family home. Well after a couple days noone else in the household showed signs of breathing issues they took me to a Dr. I was then classified as having Bronchial Asthma. So that's why I want to check out that sight as it may also relate to asthma. Thanks for this topic. From your newer posts it seems things are going okay now. Happy posting & thanks once again for this topic.

yes he is doing ok. I did have to take him to the doctors again because i thought that it came back. I was in luck he's only got a cold. Alot of other things have gone on as well. Yes rsv is part of asthma. The doctor told me that my son might end up having it. I was lucky with the other 3 children not having asthma. Thank you for the posts.

I'm so sorry you had such a week. I think you did everything right. As mothers we often have to stretch ourselves quite lot. You couldn't know how bad your little one was , specially because little babies do have much higher fever than older children because they're bodies are still not completely good at regulating temperature. Often very high fevers are nothing more than just a bad cold or something not very serious. Has your husband helped during this time? Maybe he could help out now that things are a bit more calm and let you rest a bit, you need it. My kids didn't have any serious respiratory problems as babies but my daughter started having croup when most kids usually have outgrown that. It was scary, she would cough and cough and the doctor's kept changing from one diagnose to another until a specialist finally told that although it;s smaller children that get croup, sometimes older ones and even adults get it as well. A big hug to you, hope you have a chance to rest so you are strong enough to deal with your recovering baby and the other children.

That's really scary. I have a 2-month-old baby girl and a little fever and cold always makes me nervous. What does RSV mean? What causes it?

i think that it means respotory sydnotic virus. it deals with the lungs like broncitis. I think that it's a smaller form of broncitis.. I'v got a topic out there asking where i can go and look for more information on it this way i know more about it.
